Did you know that very few people become organ donors? Only around 2% of people who die in Australian hospitals can become donors.

To be an organ donor you need to die in a hospital, usually on a ventilator in an intensive care unit, as your organs need to be working well to be transplanted. You also need to match with someone who is on the transplant waitlist.

If you can become a donor, your family will be asked to agree to donation. When someone is registered and has spoken to their family about organ and tissue donation, their family is far more likely to agree.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and change the lives of many more through eye and tissue donation.

Make sure you’re registered as an organ and tissue donor and have spoken to your family about donation. To find out more, visit www.donatelife.gov.au/all-about-donation

All major religions support organ donation. Religious leaders from the Islamic, Hindu, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist and Greek Orthodox faiths have all acknowledged their support 🩷

Sheikh Jamal-Ud-Din El-Kiki explains in this video why organ donation is accepted by Islam.

Rosemarie and Ollie suffered a terrible loss when their son, Doujon, died while overseas. Knowing he wanted to be an organ donor, tragedy turned to hope when he was able to save the lives of people in need.

By registering as an organ donor, you could save up to 7 lives one day. But it’s also important that you talk to your family about organ donation, so that they know what you would want.

We know that most Australians support organ and tissue donation, but only one-third have registered.

That’s around 13 million Australians who support donation, but haven’t taken the time to register.

There are around 2,000 people on the waitlist for a life-saving transplant who need Australia’s help. The easiest way you can help save lives is by registering as a donor at donatelife.gov.au and telling your family. They’re much more likely to agree to donation if they know.

Jay knew her daughter Inayah was in for the fight of her life when at just 19 weeks pregnancy, doctors found something wrong with Inayah’s heart.

Over the next 4 years, Inayah endured multiple surgeries before a heart transplant became her only hope for survival. Today, thanks to the incredible generosity of an organ donor and their family, Inayah is a happy, thriving 7 year old 🩷

‘I actually have nothing I can thank them with, because what they gave was priceless. And if it wasn’t for them and their family, my daughter wouldn’t be here,’ says Jay.

Blood Bikes Australia recently stopped by the DonateLife Victoria office to be celebrated as part of National Volunteer Week! Blood Bikes Australia is a group of volunteer motorcyclists across Australia who help transport blood and medical supplies to and from where they are needed.

Since December, the Blood Bikes team in Victoria has supported DonateLife Victoria by transporting blood samples as part of the organ donation process.

They’ve developed a strong partnership with our clinical team and their efficient deliveries have made a significant impact. We’re incredibly grateful for their support and the support of all DonateLife volunteers around Australia 🫶
