This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Holy Cross Women’s Rowing team’s first appearance at the Head of the Charles. Women had previously participated in the regatta as coxswains for the Holy Cross Men’s team. However, on October 17, 1976, Holy Cross had two boats represented by women in the prestigious race: Women’s Fours and Women’s Eights.

Come along for a walk from campus to neighboring Blackstone Gateway Park, which helps connect Holy Cross to the Blackstone River. The river is an important site for the Nipmuc community, as told in the documentary Pakachoag: Where the River Bends. The park is a place of natural beauty right in our neighborhood. End with a stop in the Blackstone River Greenway Visitor Center at Worcester. Part of the Planting the Seeds of Knowledge series. Links to more information in bio 🔗

On this day in …

The Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick (B.J.F.) Debating Society was founded on October 8, 1846 with the purpose of "the diffusion of knowledge, the cultivation of eloquence and readiness in debate," as stated in its constitution. In its early years, the Society inducted Honorary Members, including John Quincy Adams. It held weekly meetings in which members debated a historical or current event topic, such as "Has a state a right to secede from the Union?". The Society also had its own library, which contained important literature of the past and present, resources for preparing speeches and arguments for the weekly topic, and its use was exclusive to the members of the society.

When Dinand Library was constructed in 1927, it included a room dedicated to the Debating Society. These photos show the debate room in its early years, and then again in 2014. It has since been renovated into a flexible study space to support changing student needs.
