Waycross was built up around the railroad, and that history helped shape the unusual pattern of our downtown streets. The City of Waycross describes the original downtown plan as a Maltese Cross, the eight-pointed emblem associated with the Plant System Railroad. But the Maltese Cross has a much older story.
Traditionally, the symbol has come to represent ideals such as duty, protection, courage, service, and sacrifice. Those values are also why versions of the Maltese Cross became closely associated with firefighters and other public servants. It is a symbol we still see here in Waycross today, including on the uniforms and insignia of our own firefighters.
Over time, Waycross changed. Streets were renamed, extended, and realigned, so today’s map no longer forms a perfect Maltese Cross. But if you look closely, you can still see pieces of that original plan in the angled streets, triangular blocks, and green spaces around downtown.
Those unusual intersections are not random. They are remnants of a plan that helped shape the downtown we know today — historic storefronts, parks, civic landmarks, and buildings that now make up the Downtown Waycross Historic District.
So when you see the Maltese Cross around Waycross, you may be looking at more than one piece of our history: a symbol tied to the railroad that helped build our city, and one that continues to represent service and protection in our community.

🎉 GOOD NEWS! The restoration of the Lyric Theatre is officially underway! 🎭✨

We’re excited to see work beginning on this important piece of our downtown’s history, and we can’t wait to watch the Lyric Theatre continue its journey toward a bright new chapter!

🚧 A quick heads-up for our community: Construction work will be taking place at the Lyric Theatre over the next two weeks. If you’re traveling through the area, please use extra caution around Tebeau and Elizabeth Streets and be mindful of construction activity.
