The San Joaquin Tributaries Authority (SJTA) is a coalition of water agencies who provide a regional approach to protecting California’s water future through collaboration, strategic planning, and environmental stewardship. The San Joaquin Tributaries Authority (SJTA) is a partnership of four public water and energy providers: Modesto Irrigation District, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, South San Joaquin Irrigation District, and Turlock Irrigation District. SJTA was formed to help protect California’s water future through collaboration, long-term planning, and environmental stewardship.

Healthy rivers and reliable water supplies depend on the same carefully managed system.

SJTA member agencies are investing in science-based projects that improve ecological conditions on the Tuolumne River. Their work includes restoring habitat, studying native fish populations and strengthening watershed resilience.

These local efforts reflect a practical approach to environmental stewardship—one that uses sound science and regional expertise to support both rivers and the communities that depend on them.

Collaboration powers progress. 💧

California’s water challenges are complex and no single agency can solve them alone. Through SJTA, four public water and power agencies bring together local knowledge, technical expertise and long-term planning to advance practical solutions for the San Joaquin River and its tributaries.

This regional collaboration helps agencies make smarter investments and prepare for changing conditions while supporting reliable water supplies and healthy rivers. By working together, SJTA members can accomplish more for the Bay Area and Central Valley communities they serve.

SJTA’s priorities reflect a commitment to strengthening California’s water future through local leadership, sound science and practical solutions.

Our work focuses on five key areas:

💧 Water reliability: Preparing dependable supplies for drought and changing environmental conditions.
💧 Affordability: Delivering high-quality, cost-effective water and power services.
💧 Water-rights protection: Upholding historic rights that support communities and farmland across the Bay Area and Central Valley.
💧 Science-based stewardship: Using sound science and local expertise to guide watershed management.
💧 Multi-benefit projects: Investing in efforts that balance habitat health with water reliability.

Together, these priorities help guide SJTA’s work on behalf of 3.2 million people and 260,000 acres of farmland.

Today, SJTA joins communities across the country in recognizing Imagine a Day Without Water. 💧

Water is woven into nearly every part of daily life. It supports our homes, strengthens local economies and helps California farms grow the food families depend on. It also sustains the rivers and habitats that make our region unique.

SJTA member agencies work every day to responsibly manage this essential resource and strengthen water reliability for communities throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley.

Imagine your day without water and take a moment to appreciate the people, infrastructure and partnerships that keep it flowing.

Partnership in action along the Tuolumne River. 💧

On September 19th, SJTA member agencies and community members joined Operation 9-2-99 for a National Cleanup Day event along the north bank of the Tuolumne River in Modesto.

Together, volunteers removed 2 tons of garbage and improved 27 acres of river corridor. These efforts help support river health, enhance recreational spaces, and care for a resource that serves communities, agriculture, wildlife and recreation throughout the region.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and energy. This event demonstrates what we can accomplish when agencies, organizations and community members work toward a common goal.
