Day 4:
It’s the final day of Heat Awareness Week!
We’re wrapping up with a focus on (T)empe Heat Relief locations.
During the summer months, it is important to stay cool and hydrated. There are three different types of heat relief centers open to the public to keep everyone safe during extreme heat.

🏠Cooling Centers: All-day access to indoor, air-conditioned buildings that provide water.

🛏️Respite Center: Available during operating hours to sit, rest, or lie down and provides water.

💧Hydration Station: A temporary place to cool off that provides water.

Visit www.tempe.gov/HeatRelief to explore vital resources and check out the Maricopa Association of Governments Heat Network (https://azmag.gov/Programs/Heat-Relief-Network) for information about locations and operating hours. Don’t forget to share this knowledge with your neighbors and offer help when possible💧☀️

Welcome to Day 2 of Arizona Heat Awareness Week, Tempe Edition.
Today is focused on (E)ducation: Medication and Heat
Did you know some medications can make you more vulnerable to heat illness?

This Includes…
- High blood pressure medication
- Allergy medication
- Medication for heart conditions
- Mental health medication

These can interfere with how your body regulates temperature, sweats, or stays hydrated. If you take medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist about possible heat-related side effects. It’s especially important for older adults and those with chronic conditions.

Check out University of Arizona's Heat and Medications Taskforce (https://scorch.arizona.edu/heat-and-medications-taskforce) for additional tools and resources.

APS ratepayers are likely to face two major changes in 2026. First, APS is proposing to increase rates. Second, due to the Arizona Corporation Commission (regulators of APS) they are cutting programs that help customers reduce their electricity use and manage costs.

APS customers can provide comments in person, by phone during the hearing or submit a letter.

Hiking in the Valley? Stay Safe in the Heat! 🥵

As temperatures soar, hiking in the heat can quickly become dangerous, even deadly. Whether you’re hiking multiple trails or just out for a short hike, preparation is key!

✅ Start early and finish before the peak of the heat
✅ Drink plenty of water, even when you don't feel thirsty
✅ Know your limits and turn back if you feel dizzy or overheated
✅ Dress light - wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
✅ Tell someone your route and expected return time
✅ Reapply sunscreen frequently
✅ Protect your pets - pavement and rocks can burn their paws, and they overheat quickly. Make sure to bring extra water for them!

📵 Some trails in the Valley might close during different heat warnings, so make sure to check ahead before you go.

Keep yourself safe and healthy. The heat can kill, don't underestimate it.
