Today marks 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Nearly 3,000 American flags fill Tempe Beach Park as part of the annual Tempe Healing Field. Each flag represents a person who died that day.

For 25 years, the Healing Field has given our community a place to remember those who were lost and honor the firefighters, police officers and other first responders who ran toward danger to help.

Today, we invite you to take a moment to remember where you were that day. Share what you remember with each other, and with those who are too young to have their own memories of Sept. 11, 2001. Twenty-five years later, those conversations help keep the stories of that day alive.

The Healing Field is hosted by the Tempe Exchange Club and will remain at Tempe Beach Park through Sept. 13.

This morning, hundreds of volunteers gathered to stand up the Healing Field memorial in honor of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Presented by the Exchange Club of Tempe, the four-day display of unity marks the 25th anniversary of the harrowing attacks. The flags are on display at Tempe Beach Park through Monday morning, with several memorials and events this weekend:
-Friday, Sept. 11, 5:46 a.m. – Healing Field Tribute ceremony
-Friday, Sept. 11, 7 p.m. – Candlelight vigil
-Saturday, Sept. 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – Freedom Concert
-Sunday, Sept. 13, 7:30 a.m. – Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K run/walk (registration required).
-Monday, Sept. 14, 6 a.m. – Volunteers stand down the field. All are welcome.

Share your feedback now on Tempe’s proposed automated license plate reader ordinance.

Tempe stopped using automated license plate readers in August and canceled its contract with Flock. A proposed ordinance would put that decision into City Code.
If approved, the ordinance would prohibit City use and funding of ALPR systems for law enforcement, including entering into future contracts for the technology.

It would still allow the City to use ALPR data collected by other agencies or private systems in specific circumstances, including some multi-agency investigations, searches for missing or endangered people and when authorized through a search warrant, court order or subpoena.

The proposal would also allow some non-law-enforcement uses, such as managing City parking lots or garages.

Tempe Fire Medical Rescue divers conducted a thorough search of the area beneath the Rural Road bridge at Tempe Town Lake.

Emergency responders were called to the area shortly before 1 a.m. Monday after witnesses reported seeing a person go underwater below the bridge. Tempe Police and Tempe Fire searched the area before transitioning from a rescue operation to a recovery effort.

No one was found.

There are no additional recovery efforts scheduled at this time and there are currently no reports of a missing person connected to the search.

Witnesses or anyone with information that may be helpful are encouraged to contact the Tempe Police non-emergency line at 480-350-8311.

🌍Connecting with Mother Earth at EnVision 🌿

Tempe's Sustainability and Resilience Division is now offering classes at the EnVision Center (located at Apache & Dorsey) that connect us with nature and promote local food and native plants (and bugs!). Some recent classes included insects of the Sonoran Desert, nature journaling and a fruit pizza cooking class. This month's classes include an introduction to hydroponics and cooking with the mighty mesquite bean.

Tempe Councilmember Bobby Nichols will share his proposal to ban the City's use of automated license plate readers and prohibit future contracts with ALPR companies during a public meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The proposal would put Tempe’s recent decision to stop using automated license plate readers into City Code.

Join Councilmember Nichols on Wednesday, Sept. 9, to hear about the proposal, ask questions and share your thoughts. He plans to bring the proposed ordinance to the City Council for consideration on Sept. 24.

In memory of those who tragically lost their lives 25 years ago on Sept. 11, 2001, the Exchange Club of Tempe will present the Healing Field tribute Thursday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 13. Thousands of American flags will be placed throughout Tempe Beach Park, representing each victim. The public is invited to several events:

-Thursday, Sept. 10, 5:46 a.m. – Volunteers stand up flags. All are welcome.
-Friday, Sept. 11, 5:46 a.m. – Healing Field Tribute ceremony
