There is still time to provide feedback on the proposed 2027 Ferry Schedule, and we encourage all ferry users to do so if you have not already! Pierce County's ferry system provides service between Steilacoom, Anderson Island, and Ketron Island. We’ve received more than 600 responses so far, and the survey remains open through Sunday, November 1.

We haven’t fully analyzed the responses yet, but our team reads every submission, and we have seen your concerns about the proposed changes to Sunday service. The ferry team is actively reviewing options for Sunday service and other concerns based on your feedback.

Once the survey is closed, staff will conduct a full analysis of the data from the survey to prepare an updated schedule. Our goal is to publish the final version of the 2027 schedule in late November.

Rider Alert – Value Tickets Honored

Effective tomorrow, Oct. 28, all value passes that expired during the service outage will be honored up to four days beyond their expiration date. Refunds for expired single-use tickets will be issued up to 10 calendar days after the printed expiration date indicated on each ticket.

Rider Alert – Service Restored – First Run at Approximately 3:15

The repairs are complete and normal ferry service will resume shortly. The first run will depart from Steilacoom at approximately 3:15 p.m. County staff will help facilitate traffic control on Anderson Island as service resumes. The ferry will operate as close to the normal schedule as possible for the remainder of today, including the single evening run to Ketron.

We anticipate very high demand as service resumes, and many residents have an urgent need to use the ferry service. If you can delay your trip to maintain space for those with the greatest need, please consider doing so.

Pierce County is currently looking into whether ticket agents can accept expired ferry tickets. We will provide updates when more information is available.

We’re grateful for the way our community looked out for one another while our team worked through the repairs. Thank you for your patience as we worked to restore service.

Ferry Service Suspension – Status Update: 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26

Ferry service remains suspended today and will remain suspended tomorrow (Oct. 27). The replacement parts required have now been cleared from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and will arrive in Steilacoom tomorrow. We do not yet have an estimated timeline for when service will be restored.

Pierce County is continuing to advance alternative options with local agencies. Our team is working through logistical challenges to ensure that these options are safe for passengers and compatible with our docks. We will share information about these potential alternatives as soon as possible.

Since Saturday, we have received a lot of questions about the current suspension and have developed an FAQ to help answer those most common questions. It can be found on the ferry homepage and includes information about the events that have happened since Saturday.

The next update will be shared by 10 a.m. tomorrow. If we receive additional information about alternative vessels, we will distribute details tonight.

We recognize the hardship this disruption causes for island families and residents, and we are working urgently to restore service. Updates will continue to be issued through the City Experiences app. Instructions for downloading the app and signing up for City Experiences, along with an app FAQ, are posted on our ferry home page (www.piercecountywa.gov/ferry).

Ferry Service Suspension – Status Update: 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26

Ferry service remains suspended today. This suspension will continue tomorrow (Oct. 27). The replacement parts required for the repair are required to go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Pierce County is working with our partner agencies to get those parts delivered as soon as possible. We do not have an estimated timeline for when that work will be completed and service restored. Our team is working as fast as possible to bring the ferry back into operation.

Pierce County is currently working with the Department of Social and Health Services and the Department of Corrections to identify nearby alternatives that could be used to transport passengers and vehicles while the repairs are underway. We will provide additional information about these alternative ferry runs as soon as possible.

Ferry Service Suspension Update: Monday October 26, 2026

An earlier Rider Alert sent this morning about today’s fuel run stated that the ferry would operate on a normal schedule. That message was sent in error. Ferry service is suspended today. Please disregard the earlier notice. We apologize for the confusion.

Service will remain suspended for today, Monday, Oct. 26. The replacement parts needed for the propulsion system have been secured from Vancouver BC, and the contractor will begin installing them today. We do not have an estimated timeline for when that work will be completed and service restored. Our team is working as fast as possible to bring the ferry back into operation.

Ferry service will remain suspended for the entirety of Monday, Oct. 26. Riders are encouraged to make alternative plans as repair work continues. The needed replacement parts have been identified, but they are not available domestically. The team is working with a contractor in Canada to procure the parts as quickly as possible.
