Once again, here we are: another chapter in Baltimore County’s familiar story of corruption and insider politics, with Julian Jones swapping roles. Sometimes he’s the lead actor. Sometimes he’s playing a supporting part. But when taxpayer resources are on the line, the pattern is hard to ignore:

And let’s stop pretending this happens by accident. The people who enable this system are complicit in keeping it alive.

Living this way is a choice we’re making — accept more of the same, or demand something better.

It’s time to choose differently.

Once again, here we are: another chapter in Baltimore County’s familiar story of insider politics and taxpayer resources treated like somebody else’s money. Julian Jones keeps changing roles in the ensemble cast — sometimes the lead, sometimes the supporting actor — but developers always seem to get the hero they need.

They’re all in on it. They’re all complicit. And every time we accept the same people, the same alliances, and the same excuses, we choose to keep this system alive.

That’s why divided government matters.

Disagreement isn’t dysfunction. It’s how people test ideas, challenge bad decisions, and hammer out better ones. As a litigator, I lead settlement discussions. I’ve learned that when everyone leaves a little unhappy, it may mean nobody got everything they wanted — and everyone had to give something.

That’s not some feel-good fantasy where we all braid each other’s hair afterward. It’s a practical check on power.

Does Baltimore County need another rubber stamp? Another County Executive tucked into the back pocket of a governor who seems checked out? Or do taxpayers need someone willing to push back, set guardrails, and say no?

If you hate me, fine. Pat Dyer is another option. But don’t tell yourself that you must choose the same old broken system. The real choice is whether we keep accepting politics that serves insiders and developers — or demand a government that answers to us.

We can’t keep complaining about the results while choosing the same people and the same arrangements. Living this way is a choice. It’s time to choose differently.

Being independent doesn’t mean splitting the difference or being afraid to take a stand. It means thinking for yourself — and answering to people, not party bosses.

If one side thinks you’re too liberal and the other thinks you’re too conservative, maybe you’re making decisions issue by issue instead of reading from somebody else’s script.

That’s how I approach Baltimore County: keep people safe, respect taxpayers, and hold every branch of government accountable. No party gets a free pass. No one in power gets a pass.

That’s why I’m running as an Independent write-in for Baltimore County Executive. You don’t owe me your vote. Look at the choices, make up your own mind, and vote your conscience. If you want an executive who answers to Baltimore County residents first, write in Rob Daniels.

A vote is not a valentine. It isn’t a declaration of love for a candidate, a party, or a political team. It’s a choice about the kind of community we want to live in — and every election, that choice deserves thought.

Fun fact: You don’t have to explain your vote to anyone. What you do behind the curtain is your business. You can vote based on a candidate’s experience, their values, their plans, or whether you trust them to do the job. You can look beyond party labels and familiar names. You can make up your own mind.

And sometimes, after weighing the choices, you may decide not to cast a vote in a particular race. If no candidate has earned your support, leaving that race blank can be the most honest choice you can make. That’s fair, too. Your ballot belongs to you.

I’m running as an Independent because I believe Baltimore County deserves leadership that puts residents ahead of party politics. I hope you’ll take a close look at every candidate, ask the questions that matter to you, and make the choice that feels right for you — including writing in my name — Rob Daniels for County Executive.

Okay, okay. I keep hearing: “So what, running as a write-in independent is hard. You should’ve just done what everyone else did.” 😡

What — buy my way in?

Look at the graphic. Immediately before the race began, four of the nine largest reported campaign balances IN THE ENTIRE STATE belonged to Baltimore County Council members. Those figures were reported as of January 8, 2025 — still months before Jones, Patoka and Young filed to run for CE. They had 10s of thousands more by filing day.

That’s what happens when years in office become a fundraising head start. The same insiders who control decisions about development, zoning and public resources get to build campaign accounts an outsider could never hope to match.

Some politicians love to complain about money in politics — when it’s the other side doing it. But before they throw stones, maybe they should take a hard look at their own glass houses.

And we need to look at ours. Baltimore County has been living with this system for generations. We can turn the page, or keep rebooting the same old machine with a new face on it.

By running as an independent, I’ve already made a template for the next person. They can start where I did, build a stronger fundraising operation, sharpen the message and take this even further.

Independents are coming. Baltimore County will elect an independent County Executive before it elects another Republican.

It’s only a matter of time 👌
