I listened carefully to Republican County Executive Nominee Pat Dyer’s recent interview, and I came away with one overriding conclusion:
Pat Dyer is pretty good at identifying Baltimore County’s problems. But so are two-thirds of the people who live here. Leadership is something very different.
After 14 months on the campaign trail, Dyer should have perfected his message. He should be able to tell voters not only what’s broken, but exactly what he intends to do about it.
He can’t.
On public safety, Dyer says it’s his number-one priority and repeatedly promises to “fully fund” the police department. But Baltimore County’s problem isn’t that police positions aren’t funded. Most if not all of those positions are already funded — they’re just vacant.
That means the real questions are recruitment, retention, attrition, training and getting officers onto the street. You cannot solve a staffing problem simply by promising to fund positions that are already funded. A candidate for County Executive should understand that distinction and have a plan for fixing it.
The same pattern runs throughout the interview.
He correctly identifies crime, corruption, fiscal problems and declining confidence in county government. But again and again, Dyer diagnoses the disease without prescribing the treatment.
What specifically gets cut or restructured to address the county’s financial problems? How does he rebuild police staffing? What reforms does he implement to restore confidence in government? What does he actually do differently on Day One?
Those answers never really come.
And that matters because County Executive is not a commentator’s job. It is an executive’s job. The person sitting in that office oversees an enormous government, makes difficult budget decisions, manages agencies, sets priorities and has to turn ideas into action.
After 14 months of campaigning, this shouldn’t still be a work in progress.
The only conclusion I can reach is that Pat Dyer cannot meet this moment.
And that distinction is important because my campaign is built very differently.
My campaign is solutions-based.
I don’t pretend government is easy, and I don’t believe one political party has a monopoly on good ideas. My approach is built around a very simple idea:
I believe we can solve our biggest problems when we meet in the middle and discuss them like adults. Like the old days.
That means acknowledging problems honestly, putting competing ideas on the table, listening to people who disagree with us, and then actually making decisions.
Baltimore County doesn’t need another politician who can tell us what’s wrong.
We already know what’s wrong.
We need someone prepared to tell us what we’re going to do about it — and then lead.
