STATE CHAMPS!

Congratulations to Parkway West girls tennis on winning its first-ever team title! One week after senior Mireya David claimed the singles title in an all-Parkway West final, the Longhorns showed off their team prowess again Thursday, defeating Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in the Class 2 championship match.

“I love a quote from Billie Jean King,” said Parkway West coach Katelyn Arenos in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch interview. “She said that pressure is a privilege. There is pressure playing in a state tournament. But these girls really wanted this and played some of their best tennis.”

Parkway West softball is chasing its fourth state title and first since 1993. First pitch vs. Helias Catholic is set for 10 a.m.

“That's when I realized that I could bring just a little spark, and maybe even a little brightness into their day."

Inspired by her family's experience, Central High junior Skyley Blatz launched a student-run nonprofit that creates care packages for children facing difficult circumstances, including hospital stays, foster care, and life in homeless shelters.

Skyley shares the inspiration behind 'A Little Light' and how she's getting fellow students involved, like Central High's Day of Service, where she served as a keynote speaker.

PROP P: Parkway's 10-year financial forecast shows a growing gap between operating revenue and operating expenses. Without additional revenue, that difference is projected to reach $75 million over the next decade. Proposition P would provide the funding to close that gap.

West High senior Noor Hacking is on her way to the Ivy League and credits Parkway's real-world opportunities for giving her the practical experience and confidence needed to excel.

Noor manages to balance it all. She serves as social media manager and staff writer for the PWestPathfinder, is enrolled in Spark! Shining a spotlight on Pathfinder student journalists Max Chung, Charlie Brady, and Gage Roberts for their recent story on Proposition P.

Here are five facts:

▶ The cost of operating schools is rising faster than funding growth, creating a projected $75 million funding gap over the next 10 years.
▶ Missouri’s Hancock Amendment requires Parkway to roll back its tax rate. In addition, due to the senior tax freeze, Parkway is projected to lose ~$30 million in projected funding over the next decade.
▶ The district made reductions while minimizing the impact on students and classrooms.
▶ Prop P would provide funding for teachers and staff, school safety, classroom resources, and student programs and services. If approved, the estimated increase for a $400,000 home is approximately $7/week.
▶ This is the first time in 20 years that Parkway has placed an operating tax increase on the ballot. Even with Prop P, Parkway’s tax rate would remain lower than it was in 2016.
