As students head back to school, we want to remind everyone to help keep our roadways safe.

Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians should remain alert and be mindful of changing traffic conditions, especially during the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times. Expect increased traffic around our schools as buses, parents, students, and staff travel to and from school.

Traffic Control Officers and/or crossing guards will be stationed at select schools and intersections to assist with both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Please obey all directions and traffic signals given by them—they are there to help ensure everyone gets to and from school safely.

Whether you’re driving, biking, or walking, use extra caution, stay focused, and follow all traffic laws. A few extra moments of patience can make all the difference in keeping our students, crossing guards, officers, and community safe.

With school starting tomorrow, the Springfield Police Department would like to remind parents to be mindful of the personal information they share about their children on social media.

Many popular “Back to School” signs include details such as a child’s name, age, grade, teacher, school, favorite activities, or other personal information. While these details may seem harmless, sharing too much publicly can inadvertently provide information about your child to people you don’t know.

📸 Our recommendation:
Photos featuring detailed “Back to School” signs are best reserved for close family and friends. When posting publicly, consider using a generic “Back to School” sign that celebrates the occasion without revealing personal information.

The Springfield Police Department reminds all drivers to give bicyclists at least 4 feet of space when passing.

Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-92.4, motorists must exercise caution and provide a safe distance when passing a bicyclist. 🚗↔️🚲

A few extra seconds and a little extra space can make a life-saving difference.

August 1 – 15, 2026

August 5 – A 35-year-old Newark woman was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Madison as a result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 22.

August 5 – During the course of a motor vehicle stop on Morris Avenue, the driver presented a fraudulent insurance card to a patrol officer. The driver, a 22-year-old Elizabeth man, was arrested and charged with possession of false government documents.

August 8 – An officer on routine patrol on Morris Turnpike observed a vehicle with multiple deployed airbags that had collided with a traffic light post. The driver, a 19-year-old Whippany man, was located at the scene and subsequently charged with driving while under the influence.

August 9 – A 38-year-old Summit man was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence as a result of a motor vehicle stop on Mountain Avenue.

August 13 – A 46-year-old Linden woman was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Lodi as a result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 22.

August 14 – A 41-year-old Springfield man was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to turn over narcotics to police, and receiving stolen property as a result of an investigation at a Center Street residence.

August 15 – Officers responded to a Morris Avenue restaurant on a report of a customer refusing to pay for food provided. As a result of an on-scene investigation, a 45-year-old Elizabeth man was arrested and charged with theft by deception.

Last night, members of the Springfield Police Department were proud to participate in National Night Out, joining our community for an evening dedicated to building stronger relationships between first responders and the residents we serve.

We were honored to be joined by our public safety partners from the Springfield Fire Department, Springfield First Aid Squad, Springfield Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the Union County SWAT Team, and the Union County Prosecutor's Office. Thank you to everyone who came out to meet with us, ask questions, and enjoy a great evening together. Events like these strengthen the partnerships that help keep our community safe.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

July 16 – A 31-year-old Irvington man was arrested on outstanding warrants out of Union Township and Essex County Sheriff’s Department as a result of a motor vehicle stop on Center Street.

July 21 – A 33-year-old Newark man was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Clinton as a result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 22.

July 22 – A 64-year-old Springfield man was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Essex County Sheriff’s Office as a result of a motor vehicle stop on Brook Street.

July 26 – Patrol officers were dispatched to Newbrook Lane on a report of a disturbance. As a result of an on-scene investigation, a 57-year-old North Plainfield man was arrested and charged with simple assault.

July 28 – On July 26, officers took a report of package theft from a Berkeley Road resident. As a result of a follow-up investigation by Detective Bureau personnel, a 34-year-old Springfield man was charged with theft.
