🇺🇸 SOUTHINGTON: LET'S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE FIRE COMMISSION!
The Southington Democratic Town Committee recently accused Southington Republicans of denying Democrats representation on the Fire Commission and seeking “absolute control and power.”
There's one VERY important fact they conveniently left out: KEVIN DALY IS A LIFELONG DEMOCRAT!
Not only is Kevin Daly a Democrat, but he has dedicated decades of his life to serving Southington.
Following the Democratic Town Committee's post, Mr. Daly's daughter, Kate Daly, publicly shared some important information about her father's background and commitment to our community.
🚒 LET'S TALK ABOUT KEVIN DALY'S RECORD:
✅ 19 YEARS serving Southington
✅ FORMER DEMOCRATIC TOWN COUNCIL MEMBER who previously served the residents of Southington.
✅ FORMER VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER for 7 years. His firefighting service was cut short after being struck by a drunk driver more than 40 years ago.
✅ 40-YEAR CAREER AS AN ATTORNEY, bringing decades of professional knowledge and experience.
✅ DEDICATED COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, regularly attending Fire Department open houses, elementary school fire safety programs, and other community events.
✅ GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND, conducting research, visiting other municipalities, and speaking with officials to help improve Southington's Fire Department.
✅ A LIFELONG DEMOCRAT who, according to his daughter, has supported candidates from both parties based on their character rather than political affiliation.
As Kate Daly explained about her father:
“He will never let party lines stand in the way of what is best for the department and the residents of the town." And THAT is exactly the kind of approach we should value in local government.
SO LET'S GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT.
The decision was between two Democrats: Kevin Daly and Al Urso. Both have backgrounds in public service, and we respect Mr. Urso's years of dedication as a volunteer firefighter.
However, reappointing an experienced, longtime Democratic commissioner does NOT mean Democrats have been denied representation.
📜 WHAT DOES THE TOWN CHARTER SAY?
Section 204 of the Southington Town Charter establishes minority-party representation requirements. It does not require the Town Council to appoint a particular individual simply because a political town committee nominated that person.
The Board of Fire Commissioners consists of five members, with no more than four permitted from the same political party.
A DEMOCRAT WAS REAPPOINTED TO A SEAT ALREADY HELD BY A DEMOCRAT.
That is not eliminating minority-party representation. We appreciate Kate Daly for speaking publicly about her father's record of service and for providing residents with additional context that was absent from the original accusations.
The Southington Fire Department deserves commissioners who put the safety of residents, the needs of firefighters, and the future of the department ahead of political disagreements.
Our decisions should be based on qualifications, experience, dedication, and what is best for Southington.
PUBLIC SERVICE SHOULD COME BEFORE PARTY POLITICS.
