POST-STORM EV AND LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY

Floodwater, especially saltwater, can damage electric vehicle (EV) and lithium-ion batteries, creating a fire hazard that may not appear immediately. Damaged batteries can overheat, release toxic gases, ignite, or explode hours, days, weeks, or months after a storm.

Please take the following precautions:
• Store Batteries Above Potential Flood Levels: Keep batteries and battery-powered equipment in a dry, elevated location where stormwater cannot reach them. Follow the manufacturer's storage recommendations, or contact them with any questions regarding the product.
• Do Not Charge or Use Water-Damaged Equipment: Never charge or turn on an e-bike, scooter, power tool, or other battery-powered device exposed to floodwater. Do not drive a flooded EV.
• Recognize Warning Signs and Keep Your Distance: Swelling, excessive heat, unusual chemical odors, leaking fluid, hissing, popping, or smoke may indicate battery damage. Do not bring water-damaged batteries or equipment indoors. Only move a battery outdoors if it is cool and safe to handle. If you see smoke, sparking, or fire, evacuate the area and call 911.
• Dispose of Damaged Batteries Properly: Never place lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling bins. For disposal information, visit the link in bio. Do not transport a damaged battery unless it is safe to do so.

Remember: A battery can remain hazardous even after it dries out. Protect batteries from floodwaters before a storm and treat any water-damaged battery as a potential fire risk.

🎃Don’t let your waste sorting get spooky! 👻

After the Halloween fun, make sure your waste goes in the right place. Before tossing those decorations, treat bags, food scraps and more, check which bin they belong in. Check your hauler’s website to find out which bin they belong in.

A little sorting can make a big difference! ♻️
