Honoring Senior Volunteer Robert “Bob” Weishan:

The California Highway Patrol mourns the passing of Senior Volunteer Robert “Bob” Weishan, who passed away on July 29, 2026.

Before dedicating 25 years of service to the CHP El Cajon Area, Bob proudly served his country as a United States Marine during the Korean War. Deployed to Korea in 1950, Bob fought in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. As one of the “Frozen Chosin,” Bob was among the Marines who endured brutal conditions and fought their way out of the reservoir during one of the most renowned battles in Marine Corps history.

Bob’s commitment to service continued long after his military career. From 1992 to 2017, he served as a Senior Volunteer with the CHP El Cajon Area. In 1992, Bob helped establish the Senior Volunteer Program in El Cajon, which began as a six-month pilot program to determine whether a Senior Volunteer Program could be successfully implemented statewide.

As we know today, that pilot was a success, and Bob’s dedication helped pave the way for a program that continues to make a meaningful difference across the CHP.

From the battlefield to his community, Bob dedicated his life to serving others. We are grateful for his courage, his service, his commitment and the lasting impact he made on the CHP family and the communities he served.

Our thoughts are with his loved ones, friends, and fellow volunteers during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Bob. Thank you for a lifetime of service. 💙

🚛 Safety Starts with Every Mile!

This morning at approximately 8:35 a.m., one of our Commercial Enforcement Officers was monitoring traffic on SR-91 eastbound for commercial motor vehicles bypassing the Peralta Scales in Anaheim. The officer observed a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) fail to enter the scales and conducted an enforcement stop.

During the enforcement contact and subsequent CMV inspection, the officer discovered several serious mechanical and safety violations, including cracked welds at the turntable fl**ge and a completely broken main suspension leaf spring. Due to these critical defects, the vehicle was placed Out of Service and will not return to the roadway until the violations are corrected.

Commercial vehicle inspections play a vital role in keeping California’s highways safe. Mechanical failures on large trucks can have devastating consequences for everyone sharing the road.

Safety Reminder: Regular inspections and proper vehicle maintenance aren’t just regulatory requirements—they save lives. Whether you’re a commercial driver or a fleet operator, ensuring your vehicle is safe before every trip helps protect you, your cargo, and the traveling public.

RECOVERED: More Than $2.2 Million in Stolen Merchandise

Investigators from the CHP Border Division Cargo Theft Interdiction Program and Organized Retail Crime units recovered more than $2.2 million in stolen merchandise while serving a search warrant at a warehouse in Anaheim on June 18.

Recovered property included TaylorMade golf balls, Meta server switches, Tamiya hobby products, and other stolen merchandise connected to an ongoing investigation.

This recovery is a testament to the dedication and teamwork of our investigators working to disrupt organized theft and protect businesses, consumers, and the supply chain.

Cargo theft and organized retail crime impact everyone through higher costs and economic losses. Those who choose to engage in these crimes should know that CHP remains committed to identifying, investigating, and holding offenders accountable.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Congratulations to Officer Garcia on receiving the San Diego Police Officers Association (SDPOA) Peace Officer of the Year Award for his outstanding work and dedication to public safety.

During a traffic stop for speeding, Officer Garcia’s keen observations and proactive investigative efforts uncovered indicators that a juvenile was being trafficked. His actions led to the arrest of the suspect, helped connect the victim with her family and resources, and advanced a broader human trafficking investigation.

Officer Garcia’s commitment to looking beyond the initial reason for the stop and taking decisive action exemplifies exceptional police work. We proudly recognize him for earning this well-deserved SDPOA award and for making a meaningful difference in the lives of those he serves. 👏🚔
