What's new in the ERL? A couple of collections we're especially excited to share!

One thing we love about the ERL is offering collections that go beyond what you might expect.

Our Multilingual Collection includes books in more than 15 languages, with stories that reflect different cultures, perspectives, and experiences. We're proud to offer this collection to the OU community.

We've also created a new Literacy Corner that brings together resources for readers at every stage of learning. From foundational reading skills to literacy intervention, there's plenty to explore, especially if you're interested in how reading develops and how to support it.

These collections are what make the ERL special. They're thoughtfully selected, continually growing, and here for all to use.

As Banned Books Week wraps up, we wanted to leave you with a few practical resources you can use throughout the year.

Save these resources for when you need them:

Book Résumés (Unite Against Book Bans): One of the most useful tools! Search for a challenged title and find a free, printable document with its synopsis, professional reviews, awards, and educational value. These can be shared with administrators or book review committees when a book is challenged. bookresumes.uniteagainstbookbans.org

Unite Against Book Bans Action Toolkit: Find talking points, tips for responding to book challenges, and guidance for speaking at school board meetings. uniteagainstbookbans.org

ALA's Banned & Challenged Books: Research frequently challenged titles, explore censorship data, and better understand the difference between a challenge and a ban. ala.org/bbooks

ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom: Learn how to report censorship attempts and where to turn for support if a book is challenged in your school or library. ala.org/aboutala/offices/oif

You don't have to wait until a book is challenged to use these tools. Explore them now, learn about your school or library's reconsideration policies, and be prepared to have informed conversations about access to books.

Banned Books Week may be ending, but supporting the freedom to read is something we can do all year. Supporting everyone's freedom to choose what they read.

Challenged doesn't mean banned. But what's the difference?

A book challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict access to a book. A ban happens when a book is removed from access.

Book challenges continue to affect schools and libraries across the country. For future teachers, understanding the difference matters. The books available to students shape whose stories they encounter, what perspectives they explore, and what opportunities they have to learn about the world.

As you prepare for your own classroom, pay attention to these conversations and think about what intellectual freedom means for you and your students.

Tomorrow, we'll share some practical ways future educators can respond to book challenges and support the freedom to read.

Banned Books Week has been around since 1982, bringing attention to books that have been challenged or removed from schools and libraries. This year’s theme is Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.

All week, we’ll share challenged books, short videos, author conversations, and resources that explain why books get challenged and why access to them still matters.

Join us as we celebrate the freedom to read with a Banned Books Fair on Tuesday, October 6, from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. in the Kresge Library Nyberg Room.

Stop by to browse and check out books from Kresge Library and the Educational Resources Lab, learn more about banned and challenged books, and pick up some free swag.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month.

Our current ERL display brings together books and resources that can help support conversations about mental health, grief, and su***de prevention. We’re also featuring Why?, a picture book designed to help parents and counselors talk with young children about a parent’s su***de.

Stop by the ERL to explore the display and available resources.
