Thank You, Captain Gary Purdom!
In March 1984, a young and motivated individual named Gary Purdom embarked on a journey that would shape not only his life but also leave an indelible mark on the firefighting community. Joining the ranks of the Rochester Fire Department (RFD), Gary's commitment to service and his unwavering dedication to the community were evident from the very beginning.
Following the footsteps of his father, Captain Jim Purdom, Gary jumped into the world of firefighting completing the then 66-Hour Fire Academy in June 1984, where he acquired the fundamental skills that would serve as the foundation for his illustrious career. By November of the same year, he became a certified Basic EMT, showcasing his commitment to not only fighting fires but also providing crucial emergency medical assistance to those in need.
The year 1987 marked a significant milestone for Gary, as he was hired to a full-time position with the Birmingham Fire Department. Eager to enhance his capabilities, he completed FF 1&2 in June 1987, further solidifying his expertise in firefighting. Undeterred by the challenges of balancing work and education, he earned an associate degree in Fire Science from Macomb Community College in June 1988, and shortly thereafter, earned his Paramedic license in July 1989.
In the midst of his career achievements, Gary found love and family. He tied the knot to his wife Laurie on May 4, 1996, and by May 1998, welcomed two beautiful children into his life, Cooper and Kylie.
By the late 1990s Gary’s career continued to advance as he delved into tech rescue training in 1998, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to staying at the forefront of firefighting and special operations. Recognition for his skills and leadership was not far off. In 2003, Captain Purdom was promoted to Lieutenant/Medic, a testament to his exemplary service and leadership within the department. Continuing his upward trajectory, he achieved the rank of Captain in 2008, a position he would hold until his retirement from Birmingham in June of 2014.
However, this retirement did not mark the end of his service. March 2015 saw him return to the Rochester Fire Department on a part-time basis, displaying an enduring passion for his service to the community he grew up in. In February 2019, when Gary transitioned back into full-time service, this time as a Captain at the Rochester Fire Department. This period of resurgence showcased his continued commitment to the fire service and the community he so dutifully served. Gary continued to serve for nearly five more years on B and A Shifts, leading the way in training and mentorship of young firefighters during his time.
Throughout his career, Gary also played an instrumental role in shaping the labor relations landscape. He started his union service in Birmingham Local 911, where he held various positions including Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer from 1995 to 2014, exemplifying his commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of fellow firefighters.
In 2019, Captain Purdom played a pivotal role in the establishment of Local 5234, serving a Charter Member and the first President of the Local. His influence extended beyond the local level, as demonstrated by his participation in the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union (MPFFU) Political Education Committee, a role he held from 2014 to the present.
Beyond the call of duty, Gary’s charitable activities have been nothing short of extraordinary. Since 1984, he has helped lead the Rochester Goodfellows paper sales, raising over $340,000 to various causes during the last 40 years. Additionally, Gary served as the Toys-for-Tots administrator for the Birmingham Fire Department for 12 years, and as the MDA Fill-the-Boot administrator for 18 years. Gary was also a pivotal volunteer with the Rochester Guns & Hoses Hockey team for three years, helping raise more than $30,000 to the New Day Foundation for Families.
One of his most significant contributions came after 9/11, where his team’s efforts helped to raise over $80,000, which was subsequently donated to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). Gary’s continued dedication to charitable endeavors has not only enhanced the lives of those in need but also showcased the true spirit of community service.
Among some of Gary’s recreational activities over the years, he participated with the Rochester waterball team for nearly 20 years. During this time, his team won a State Championship in 1999, as well as 13 championships at the Roscommon Firemen’s Memorial. Gary’s waterball team traveled to more than 40 cities across the US and Canada competing in waterball events and representing the community with pride.
As Gary Purdom embarks on a well-deserved retirement, he plans to spend time with his family, and travel across the country with his wife Laurie for some well-deserved and overdue camping trips.
In Gary’s departure, the community and the Rochester Fire Department are left with a legacy of excellence, dedication, and unwavering service. His remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to current and future generations of firefighters, a testament to the impact one individual can make through a lifetime of commitment to the safety, well-being, and betterment of others.
Congratulations, Gary, on a career that truly set ablaze the spirit of service, camaraderie, and compassion within our family and the community. We will truly miss you.
Thank you and Congratulations!
