Rhode Island - it's that time of year again: Narragansett Council - Scouting America's Scouting for Food!

This Saturday, October 31st (🎃 Halloween morning!), check your front door. If you received a door hanger, that means Scouts in your area are participating in Scouting for Food, Scouts' largest community service event of the year where they collect donations of non-perishable food items for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and its member agencies around the state.

If you received a door hanger, Scouts will be back in your neighborhood on the morning of Saturday, November 7th to retrieve donations of non-perishable food items. 🚪 Just leave your donations outside your front door (or wherever your hanger was left) by 9 AM on the morning of the 7th and Scouts will deliver donations to the Food Bank or a local pantry. Important dates to remember:
🗓️ Saturday, 10/31: door hangers dropped off in eligible neighborhoods
🗓️ Saturday, 11/7: leave bagged or boxed donations out by 9 AM

🥫 Most needed non-perishable food items include:
Canned fish & meat,
Canned/dried beans & lentils,
Canned soups/stews/chilis,
Canned fruits & vegetables,
Canned tomato products,
Rice & pasta,
Boxed macaroni & cheese,
Cereal,
Nut & seed butters,
Spices & condiments.

It's almost time for Scouting for Food with Narragansett Council - Scouting America!

🗓️ Saturday, Nov. 7 is Be My Neighbor Day, a free community event that celebrates what it means to be a caring neighbor. From 1-4 PM, we'll be at Meeting Street's RI campus (1000 Eddy St, Providence) and all are welcome!

The RI Food Bank's Community Nutrition team co-created this event with Ocean State Media, and this year every Food Bank team is bringing something to the party:

🍎 Community Nutrition is handing out fresh produce, and the Healthy Habits crew has a farmers market coloring activity for the kids.
🤝 Community Outreach will be on hand to talk SNAP benefits and distribute helpful resources.
🏠 Agency Services will have info on our network of member agencies and meal sites, so you know where to find food close to home.

We met Jessica, a single mom to a sweet 5-year-old, during a visit to Comprehensive Community Action Program, Inc. in Cranston. Jessica has a disability, and knows her diet affects the overall health of her and her daughter. They eat primarily vegetarian, centering fruits and vegetables, and beans and protein pastas – most of which she can find at the pantry. Jessica makes her own sourdough bread and grows tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers in her backyard. 🍞 Leaning on the pantry and growing her own food are part of a conscious effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle despite financial challenges, like increased property taxes and decreased SNAP benefits.

"Becoming disabled has impacted my world on multiple levels. But being able to come to the pantry without judgment is encouraging. This is my situation today, but it's not indicative of tomorrow," she shared. 💬

Please join us in wishing our Chief Philanthropy Officer, Dana DiMarco, a happy 1-year anniversary at the RI Food Bank! 🎉 The latest chapter in a 30-year career built on curiosity and purpose, DiMarco's time in the nonprofit space has enabled her to understand the work from every angle, with roles in national organizations, at smaller organizations immersed in social services, as well as at a major fundraising software provider, where she built a deep understanding of data.

Dana joined the Food Bank amid a historic government shutdown: when our network of member agencies stepped up to feed the largest number of neighbors ever in Food Bank history. "I've been blown away by the scale and efficiency of the Food Bank's response," said Dana.

"You realize just how essential, and how real, this network is," she recalled. But for Dana, the mission of the Food Bank comes back to something simpler: "At its core, it's about dignity."
