Last night, the Rhode Island House of Representatives passed legislation that would claw back already approved charter public school seats, prohibit the addition of any new seats in charter public schools for three years, and permanently reduce the charter school cap. The future of educational opportunities in Rhode Island now rests with Governor McKee.

We asked three members of the charter public school community to share their perspectives: a parent, an alumnus, and Rhode Island League of Charter Public Schools Executive Director Chiara Deltito-Sharrott.

Families, students, alumni, and community members have testified at every hearing, engaged in countless conversations, and taken every opportunity to advocate against this harmful legislation.

Our community has shown up. Now, we’re asking Governor McKee to do the same.
Governor Dan McKee, we urge you to veto the charter public school moratorium bill.

Today, legislation to limit charter public school growth moved one step closer to becoming law.

Charter public schools were created to strengthen public education by helping students find a school that is right for them. Yet despite strong support from Rhode Islanders for expanding educational opportunities, lawmakers continue to advance legislation that would restrict options for current and future families.

Students and families want - and should have - access to the public school that best meets their needs.

We remain committed to advocating for educational opportunity and a public education system that works for every student.

What happens when a student finds the right fit?

In a recent Boston Globe opinion piece, The Compass School alumnus and current Head Page at Rhode Island House of Representatives Jay Thornber reflects on how his experience helped shape the leader he is today, from overcoming anxiety and developing confidence as a public speaker to preparing for his next chapter at Harvard University.

His story is a powerful reminder that students thrive in different environments and that access to a variety of public education options can make a lasting difference in a child's life.

At a time when Rhode Island is debating the future of public school choice, stories like Jay’s highlight why these opportunities matter to students and families across our state.

In a disheartening move, the Rhode Island Senate voted last night to permanently limit public school opportunities for generations of our state’s children, passing S2787aa.

It's disappointing and ultimately, bad public policy. Supporters of the ban have been misrepresenting the legislation calling it a ‘pause,’ knowing full well that the bill contains language that makes immediate harmful changes. This legislation will permanently reduce the already-stringent cap on charter public schools and unfairly claw back the preliminary approval granted to the new De La Comunidad Bilingual School. Nothing about this bill is good for Rhode Island’s K-12 families.

exist to strengthen public education in our state by helping students find a public school that is right for them. The majority of Rhode Island voters want to see an expansion of educational opportunities across our state, but with this vote, the Senate has moved Rhode Island in the opposite direction.

🚨 Today, the Rhode Island Senate will vote on S2787-A.

Despite being described as a temporary three-year pause, this bill would have lasting consequences for the future of charter public schools in Rhode Island. It would disregard the voices of voters, educators, students, and families, while overturning the Council of Elementary and Secondary Education’s decisions to approve De La Comunidad and expand The Greene School to serve middle school students.

Rhode Island families deserve more educational opportunities—not fewer.

significant impact on students and families across our state: https://bit.ly/4xrvzH9

At 4:00 PM today, the RI Senate Education Committee will consider S2787-A, a bill that would take away educational opportunities from Rhode Island students.

Both the original bill and the proposed substitute would claw back charter public school seats that have already been approved for The Greene School. It would also permanently reduce the state's charter public school cap, override the Council’s decision to approve De La Comunidad Bilingual School, and impose a three-year suspension of any new charter school seats. Instead of meaningfully addressing the concerns Rhode Islanders have raised on this harmful legislation, this new bill presents more of the same.

A few weeks ago, Adriel, a Pawtucket resident and senior at The Greene School, spent his 18th birthday at the State House speaking out against this harmful legislation. He didn't spend that milestone celebrating with friends; he spent it fighting for the school that has helped shape his future.

Adriel believes in opportunity. He believes in his school. He believes in the power of his voice. And Rhode Island students like him deserve leaders who will listen.
