Yesterday afternoon, multiple fire agencies responded to a significant wildland fire in Pawnee County. Responding departments included Pawnee Fire Department, Pawnee Nation Fire Department, Maramec Fire Department, Ralston Fire Department, Glencoe Fire Department, and Morrison Fire Department. (Sorry if I missed your department)

Additional resources were requested through the activation of the Lake Area Task Force by Pawnee County Emergency Management. Task Force resources included apparatus and personnel from Sand Springs Fire Department, Keystone Fire Department, Basin Fire Department, Green Country Fire Department, and Cleveland Fire Department. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) firefighters also responded and provided invaluable assistance.

With the support of a local dozer operator, a dozer line was constructed along the west side of the fire. Firefighters then conducted a strategic burnout operation from the dozer line, successfully stopping the fire’s westward progression and protecting additional property.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and support personnel, Incident Command reported the fire was approximately 95% contained as of 1:00 a.m.

As conditions continue to become hotter and drier across our area, the risk of wildland fires is increasing rapidly. We ask everyone to use extreme caution with anything that produces heat, open flames, or sparks. A single spark can quickly become a fast-moving wildfire under these conditions.

We extend our sincere appreciation to every firefighter, emergency responder, support personnel, and the local landowner who assisted with heavy equipment. Your teamwork and dedication helped protect lives, property, and natural resources.

Update!

Excessive heat and primarily dry conditions are forecasted through the week ahead. Wildfire activity is expected to increase although initial attack efforts are expected to remain successful. Western Oklahoma remains in the grips of drought that extends into some areas of central Oklahoma. With the heat and building separation from wetting rainfall, a modest uptick in wildfire activity is expected coupled with increased resistance to control where drought indices in the extreme to exceptional classification persist in western Oklahoma. Large fire potential remains limited to areas where terrain and/or vegetation limit access while significant fire potential is low.

Please refrain or delay outdoor burning activities if possible. Escaped debris burns, outdoor welding and haying operations are common wildfire causes during the summer months. Consider the following if engaging in those activities:
• Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and inspected daily.
• Have a means of fire suppression on hand such as a fire extinguisher, water source and/or a rake or shovel.
• If welding outdoors, post a look out and work over welding mats or blankets.
• If debris burning, make proper notifications and stay with your burn until fully extinguished

‼️‼️5:15 UPDATE: Thanks to our transmission partners at KAMO for getting the power to 2,500 restored in less than an hour.

They still are working on the transmission line that is down but reacted quickly and switched feeders around so members would not be without power in the interim.

You still could have a small blip later when they switch you back, but nothing substantial.

LARGE OUTAGE: About 2,300 meters (11%) are experiencing an outage. We’ve been told KAMO has a transmission line down and their crews are headed out to assess the issue. We don’t have any more info at this time, but as soon as we do, we will update this post.

As always, lineworkers get the job done as fast as safety allows. They understand it is hot and inconvenient and will do all they can to minimize the time you are without power.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of retired Pawnee County Undersheriff Calvin Kester.

Calvin or “Cal” as most knew him by, had a distinguished career as a law enforcement officer spanning over 36 years. He served the community in Cleveland, OK as a patrol officer and Assistant Chief of police for 22 years. During this time he also functioned as an instructor, a special investigator and as the K9 handler with his partner, “Benny”. Additionally, Cal was a jail inspector for the State of Oklahoma for 14 years and completed his service to the people as the Undersheriff of Pawnee County before returning to retirement.

Cal will be deeply missed and forever remembered by the people who were fortunate enough to meet him. Our deepest condolences and appreciation go out to his wife Valerie and extended family and friends.
