🎃 Wear bright clothing – Choose bright-colored costumes or add reflective material so drivers can see you.

🔦 Carry a flashlight – Make sure you can see where you are walking and others can see you.

🏠 Stay in well-lit areas – Trick-or-treat in neighborhoods with good lighting and use sidewalks when available.

👨‍👩‍👧 Have an adult present – Young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.

🚗 Watch for vehicles – Look both ways before crossing streets, use crosswalks, and never assume a driver sees you.

Emil is 91 and lives on the third floor of an old brick building on Main Street in a Pennsylvania river town. There's no elevator. Last November his dog's back legs gave out.

Brutus is a 13-year-old Newfoundland mix and weighs 120 pounds. The vet said the old dog could still get around on flat ground but would have to be carried on stairs. Emil's daughter lives in Arizona. Most days he can barely carry the groceries up.

He knew what the next call would be, and he didn't want to make it.

Across the street is the volunteer fire company Emil belonged to for 40 years. So he called the station instead and asked if anybody there knew a way to get a big dog down three flights.

Six of them came over that evening, most of them half his age. They brought the canvas carry sheet they use on narrow stairwells, the one with handles all the way around. Four of them lifted Brutus onto it and carried the old dog down to the strip of grass behind the building. After 20 minutes they carried the dog back up. Brutus never fussed on the carry sheet. The old dog lay flat with front paws crossed and looked at the ceiling the whole way down.

Then they made a schedule. Every morning at seven and every evening at six, two firefighters crossed the street and knocked on Emil's door. They came on Christmas morning. During the ice storm in January one of them came straight from a call with his boots still wet.

Emil started leaving the coffeepot on for the morning crew. The evening crew got whatever he'd baked, usually banana bread.

That went on twice a day for five months. Brutus learned the knock and was waiting at the door with the tail going before the second rap.

In April an apartment opened up on the ground floor of the same building, and the landlord gave it to Emil. The six firefighters carried Brutus down the three flights one last time.

Then they went back up and carried down the couch.

🚩🔥 RED FLAG WARNING – HIGH FIRE DANGER! 🔥🚩

Orange County ESD #4 is asking everyone to PLEASE AVOID ALL OUTDOOR BURNING!

Due to the lack of recent rainfall, vegetation is extremely dry. With an approaching cold front bringing gusty winds and lower humidity over the next several days, conditions are favorable for fires to start easily and spread rapidly.

🚫 NO OUTDOOR FIRES!

* Do not burn brush, leaves, or trash.
* Avoid campfires and recreational fires.
* Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials.
* Be cautious when operating equipment that could produce sparks.

🔥 Even a small fire can quickly become a dangerous wildfire under these conditions.

Please help us protect our homes, property, firefighters, and neighbors by doing your part to prevent fires.

Your cooperation can make a difference!

🚒 Orange County ESD #4 – Fire Prevention Tip of the Week! 🚒

🔥 SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! 🔥

Smoke alarms are one of the most important tools for protecting your family from a house fire. Early warning can make the difference between life and death!

🏠 Smoke Alarm Safety Tips:

✅ Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom.

✅ Install smoke alarms in hallways outside sleeping areas.

✅ Have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home.

✅ In a two-story home, install a smoke alarm near the top of the stairway.

✅ Test your smoke alarms weekly to make sure they are working properly.

✅ Replace batteries twice a year if your alarms use replaceable batteries. Never remove batteries without replacing them.

✅ Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, or sooner if recommended by the manufacturer.

🚨 Remember: A working smoke alarm gives you and your family valuable time to escape during a fire.

Orange County ESD #4 reminds everyone: Fire prevention starts at home. Protect your family, check your smoke alarms, and stay fire safe!

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION TIP OF THE WEEK 🔥

Extension cords are temporary—not permanent wiring.

⚠️ Never use extension cords as a permanent power source.
⚠️ Avoid multi-plug adapters that can overload an electrical outlet.
⚠️ Overloaded cords and outlets can overheat and start a fire.
⚠️ Replace damaged, cracked, or frayed electrical cords immediately.

If you need additional outlets, have a qualified electrician install them properly.

A little prevention today can prevent a fire tomorrow.
