🌍 Global perspectives start with experiences beyond borders!

Last week, we welcomed the WU Executive Academy to the Austrian Consulate General in New York for the, by now-traditional, annual Farewell Reception, concluding their study trip to Boston and NYC. 🎓

It was a great pleasure to be part of their time in the U.S.
Experiences like these offer unique opportunities in today’s globally connected workplace by exploring perspectives and networking across the Atlantic Ocean. 🌐🤝

A big thank you to the WU Executive Academy team for the excellent collaboration! 🙌✨

🖼️ An 1847 watercolor by Albert Theer has been returned to the family of its rightful owner, 86 years after it was lost to N**i persecution.

Eduard Epstein was a Viennese textile merchant and art collector. After the „Anschluss“ in 1938, his business was liquidated, his home was searched by the Gestapo, and he was imprisoned for nearly a year following a failed attempt to move assets out of the country.

In 1940, after being forced to sell his property, Epstein applied to take the remainder of his art collection abroad. Most of it was approved for export - except a small watercolor miniature by Albert Theer, which was instead acquired by Vienna’s Museum of Military History for a nominal sum.

Many decades later, Austria’s Art Restitution Advisory Board recommended returning the painting to Epstein’s heirs. Following thorough investigation by the Commission for Provenance Research, that recommendation was carried out on Wednesday this week: Deputy Consul General Johannes Gassner traveled to Minneapolis, where he was joined by Honorary Consul Kurt Witte to personally hand over the painting to Jacqueline Sondell, Eduard Epstein’s great-niece and heir, in the presence of her family and members of the local Jewish community.

💡 Did you know? Austria’s Commission on Provenance Research systematically investigates artworks in federal museum collections to identify and return items lost through N**i persecution.

🏊🏼‍♂️ Austrian swimmer Josef Köberl visited the Austrian Consulate General New York yesterday, after swimming around the entire island of Manhattan earlier this week with an incredible time of 8 hours and 19 minutes 🙌🏼

🌟We were fascinated to hear about how he prepared for this remarkable achievement and about the next challenges ahead: swimming across the Catalina Channel in California and the Tsugaru Strait in Japan 🇯🇵 later this year.
