Today, the Merced County District Attorney’s Office partnered with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office to speak with students about the meaning of Red Ribbon Week and the importance of making healthy, safe choices. We visited Ballico Elementary, El Capitan Elementary, Schendel Elementary, and Harmony Elementary to educate students about the dangers of illicit drugs and help them prepare to say no when faced with peer pressure.

Throughout Red Ribbon Week, our office will continue visiting schools across Merced County to educate and encourage our youth to make safe choices. An educated community is a safer and more informed community. What schools do you think we are going to be at tomorrow?

This Red Ribbon Week, the Merced County District Attorney’s Office is partnering with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office through our “One Pill Will Kill” campaign to educate our youth about the dangers of illicit fentanyl.

On October 23, 2026, a Merced County Jury returned a verdict of GUILTY on Exhibiting a Deadly Weapon,
PC 417(a)(1) for defendant Eric E. Tobias.

The Honorable M. Donabed presided over the trial. Deputy District Attorney Rodrigo Aguilar prosecuted the case.

Drugstore Project | Atwater
Parents watch as Deputy District Attorney Ryan Heller presents his case against their daughter during a mock sentencing hearing at the annual Atwater Drugstore Project.

The parents shared their appreciation for the event and explained their daughter’s participation hit close to home. Their family has experienced the loss of a loved one to illicit fentanyl, making the program’s message especially meaningful.

The Drugstore Project gives youth and their families an opportunity to learn about the dangers of illicit fentanyl and other illegal drugs. The Merced County District Attorney’s Office will continue working with our community partners to educate our youth, raise awareness, and help prevent future tragedies.

On September 16, 2026, a Merced County Jury returned a verdict of GUILTY on DUI 23152 (a) VC, 23152 (b) for the defendant Victor David Contreras.

The Honorable Ashley Albertoni Sausser presided over the trial. Deputy District Attorney Griffin Goldberg prosecuted the case.

Parker Hits the Pavement! 🐾

Today, our Victims’ Advocate and Facility Service Dog Parker hit the pavement and participated in the Merced Police K9 Association’s Merced Paws on Patrol Fun Run! It was a great opportunity to connect with our community while supporting a great cause. Parker is always ready to make new friends!

Our office has a continued effort to protect local businesses. Retail theft is a priority for the Merced County District Attorney’s Office, and we’re working alongside law enforcement and retailers across the county to address it.

We thank the Merced Police Department , Atwater Police Department and our local retailers for their continued partnership. During our most recent enforcement operation, individuals were arrested for theft related offenses. These operations are part of our ongoing efforts to reduce retail theft, protect businesses, protect their customers and hold those responsible accountable.

Today we are participating in the 28th Annual Career Industry Day!

Our Victims’ Advocate, Deputy District Attorneys, and Investigator connected with local youth to share their experiences and provide insight into careers in public service.

Inspiring and educating the next generation remains a priority for our office. Thank you to the Merced County Office of Education (MCOE) for the invitation and for creating opportunities for our youth!

Day One of the Drug Store Project is underway!

The Drug Store Project gives youth across Merced County an opportunity to learn about the dangers of illicit fentanyl and other illegal drugs.

This important effort is made possible through a continued partnership with our office, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Merced County Probation, Merced County Superior Courts, AMR, Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center, CAL FIRE, Merced County Public Health and many others.

The Merced County District Attorney’s Office will continue to find opportunities to connect with, engage, and educate our youth about the dangers of illicit fentanyl.

Today, our office including K9 Parker were proud to participate in Walk, Ride & Roll to School Day! It was a great opportunity to connect with students and parents and show our support for our community’s youth. We are committed to encouraging students to be in school, on time, and ready to learn.
