Early this morning Morgan County Fire Rescue responded to a working structure fire at 2781 Old Buckhead Road. Units from Fire Station 16 arrived on scene to find a well involved accessory dwelling. Personnel and apparatus from Fire Station 1 (Apalachee), Fire Station 2 (Central), Fire Station 3 (Bostwick), Fire Station 4 (Buckhead), Fire Station 6 (Fairplay), Fire Station 7 (Clacks Chapel), Fire Station 8 (Bethany), Fire Station 9 (Rutledge), The City of Madison Fire Department, and Greene County Fire Rescue all responded. There were 3 young adults asleep in the bardo-minium style building when the fire broke out. Fortunately, they were alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and were able to escape unharmed. With time change it's always a good idea to test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries in them. Smoke alarms save lives. Thank you to all who responded and assisted with this incident.

🔥 Need a burn permit? There's now an easier way to get one!

Beginning TODAY, the Georgia Forestry Commission is offering a new online burn permit system, making it more convenient to obtain permits for eligible agricultural, land-clearing and silvicultural burns.

💻 Apply from your computer or phone.
⏰ Available daily from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
📅 Permits are issued for the current day only.

The new system follows the same local restrictions and safety requirements already in place. If burning isn't permitted in your area or for your burn category that day, the system will let you know.

One important note: Certified Prescribed Burn Managers requesting silvicultural permits must enter their certification number. Those without a number will be directed to contact GFC for assistance.

And remember, permits are not required for hand-piled natural vegetation, but Georgia's SSTAR safety requirements still apply.

For those curious why I-20 WB was shut down this morning, here you go. Early this morning MCFR was dispatched to a vehicle fire. E16 and BN 1 arrived on scene to find a well involved cargo trailer. Luckly the tractor trailer driver was able to disconnect from the trailer after pulling it into the right emergency lane. This action on the part of the driver assists in giving our firefighters a safer area to operate as well as reducing the chance of a subsequent accident due to blocking the road.

Last evening volunteer members from Fire Station 5 (Godfrey), Fire Station 8 (Bethany), and Fire Station 9 (Rutledge) attended task force training at Fire Station 10 on Mission Road. We have made significant strides in getting our classrooms up and running at the new training facility. Prior to all practical exercises, students attend a classroom session to discuss the principals and practices of the training topic for the evening, which last nights was ventilation. Captain Nik Cooper has done an exceptional job carrying this vision forward and our members really seem to appreciate the work being put in. We will keep on keeping on.
