Thank you The L.A. Local for speaking with our president, Jackie Broxton, about the milestone Pershing Square renaming for Biddy Mason!

The LA City Council voted Friday to rename Pershing Square after Bridget “Biddy” Mason, a formerly enslaved woman who became one of the city’s founders, public servants and philanthropists.

Today we celebrate FREEDOM and honor the legacy of Biddy Mason, whose courage led to liberation from slavery and a future dedicated to helping others.

Her story reminds us we can all do something to uplift those around us, especially those impacted by the foster care system ❤️🖤💚 Happy Juneteenth!

The success of current and former foster youth is never an afterthought 💙

In the early days of LA, Biddy Mason went from enslavement to entrepreneur. She never forgot her roots, and fought for others—including children without permanent families—to have access to care and education. She’s our inspiration, the reason BMCF is included in the Underground Railroad map, and the heart of our foster youth scholarship program!
