I was proud to celebrate the newly renovated Norwood Library! First opened in 1950, this library has served generations of El Monte families. Now, with more than $7 million in improvements, including $800,000 in First District funding, it features refreshed reading areas, an updated lobby, upgraded technology and exterior improvements.

I am proud to have helped make this investment possible and look forward to seeing Norwood continue to serve El Monte families for generations to come.

My heart is broken by the passing of my dear friend Dolores Huerta. It is difficult to imagine my life in public service without her. For decades, she was a source of strength, a trusted friend and a partner in some of the most important fights of my career. I learned so much from Dolores, and I will forever cherish the time we shared and the privilege of having worked alongside her.

Growing up in the San Gabriel Valley, I rarely saw Latinas in positions of leadership. Dolores was one of the few women who showed me what was possible. I remember seeing the iconic photograph of her holding the ‘Huelga’ sign and drawing strength from her example. She helped me understand that women like us had a place in public life and a responsibility to speak up for those too often ignored. That lesson stayed with me throughout my career.

From the state Legislature to Congress and my time serving in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet, Dolores remained a constant in my life. We joined demonstrations and rallies, stood with workers fighting for their rights and demanded action when people in power looked away. I will never forget her visit to Sacramento while I was working with women farmworkers organizing to form a union. She showed me footage of a farmworker being brutally mistreated. When it ended, she looked at me and said, ‘Let’s get to work.’ That was Dolores. She did not waste time accepting excuses. She focused on what needed to be done.

I carried that same determination when Dolores and I traveled to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to demand justice for women who had been murdered or disappeared. We called for accountability for the femicides that devastated families and communities. Dolores understood the importance of showing up, bearing witness and refusing to let the suffering of women go ignored. I will always remember standing beside her in that fight. A new chapter for LA Opera! I was proud to recognize Domingo Hindoyan as he begins his five-year tenure as the company’s Richard Seaver Music Director, bringing his international experience and passion for music to Los Angeles County.

With Venezuelan and Armenian roots, Domingo brings a unique cultural perspective to his new role. I look forward to seeing his artistic vision take shape and to expanding opportunities for Angelenos to experience the power of opera and the arts.

I’m honored to be recognized by Themusiccenter with a plaque at Jerry Moss Plaza, a space I was proud to help bring to life as part of our broader effort to make the arts more accessible across County of Los Angeles. Thank you to The Music Center’s President and CEO Rachel Moore and Executive Vice President and COO Howard Sherman for this recognition.

The Music Center is a vital cultural institution, bringing world-class performances, arts education and free public programming to Angelenos. From Jerry Moss Plaza and Gloria Molina Grand Park to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum, these spaces connect people through the arts and enrich our region’s cultural life.

Thank you also to The Music Center’s resident companies, Center Theatre Group, LA Opera, LA Phil and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, along with the many board members, staff and cultural partners, for making these experiences possible.

Throughout my time on the Board of Supervisors, I have worked to ensure that access to the arts does not depend on where someone lives or what they earn. That commitment has guided my work on the County’s Cultural Equity and Inclusion Initiative, which has expanded opportunities for artists and communities historically underrepresented in the arts.

I am proud of what we have accomplished together.

Construction is officially underway at the Montebello Library! With $1 million in First District funding, we’re investing in new flooring, lighting, furniture and needed repairs to modernize the library and improve the experience for everyone who walks through its doors. These improvements will help ensure the Montebello Library continues to meet the needs of families, students and residents of all ages for years to come.

I’m excited to bring $1.1 million in First District funding to South El Monte for upgrades to local parks and recreational facilities!

Shively Park will get a new jogging track and lawn improvements. Mary Van D**e Park will receive new playground equipment and shade structures, while New Temple Park will get three new scoreboards and renovations to five scoring booths. The South El Monte Senior Center will also receive roof improvements.

These improvements will give South El Monte residents more opportunities to stay active, enjoy the outdoors and connect with one another.

I was proud to bring LA Opera’s free simulcast of Carmen to William Steinmetz Park in Hacienda Heights, giving San Gabriel Valley residents the opportunity to experience world-class opera close to home.

Thank you to LA Opera for this partnership and for extending arts programming to local seniors and students. Everyone deserves access to the arts, regardless of their ZIP code or ability to pay.
