🚨 TODAY, the LA City Council voted 12-1 to approve next fiscal year's budget which starts on July 1, 2027.

We'd like to thank & for trying to get us more auditors in the budget. Unfortunately, that motion was referred to be discussed later in Committee.

At a time when the City needs more transparency, accountability, and oversight, especially as our budget grows and the number of fraud, waste, and abuse claims increase, it's a shame only a few in City Hall value the work that we do to protect YOUR tax dollars. 🔎

Two years ago, City Hall cut our fraud, waste, and abuse unit's budget. Today, we still haven't gotten those investigator positions back.

Even AFTER catching tens of millions of dollars in fraud, waste, and abuse with only FIVE investigators for the SECOND LARGEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY where we get nearly 800 FWA CLAIMS ANNUALLY, City Hall still didn't fund us not even ONE additional investigator in next fiscal year's budget. 😮‍💨

The allegations currently under investigation range from payroll fraud to contractor fraud/waste involving HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars. That’s hundreds of millions of dollars of questionable costs!

Tell your City Council Member to fund the Controller's audit and fraud, waste, and abuse unit in next fiscal year's budget! They will vote on the final budget this Thursday, May 21!

How the City of LA's screw up in excess police contributions (contributing more than they needed to at the time) keeps taking MILLIONS more that could be used to fund other city services like Animal Welfare or even our Audit / Fraud, Waste, & Abuse Investigations.

This is also not LAPD's fault, it's City Hall's.

05/09/2026

Our Office has been doing the best we can provide transparency, accountability, & oversight on City Hall, including catching $23 in one fraud case from a homeless service provider. Everyone in City Hall talks about the NEED for more oversight, well they need to fund it in this budget process.

Tell your City Council Member to fund the Controller's audit and fraud, waste, & abuse investigation unit! It's in their hands now!

Performance Audits are NEEDED on ALL City programs, no matter where they fall under (elected officials or city departments). If not, hundreds of millions of dollars can go unchecked. These performance audits can help City programs perform better, more efficiently and effectively, and most importantly, save tax dollars.

🤔 WANT us to audit & do fraud, waste, and abuse investigations without getting our budget cut in retaliation? Want us to be able to audit any City program no matter how expensive and regardless of where that city program is housed?

Well, we NEED YOUR HELP, LOS ANGELES! In case you missed it, the City is undergoing Charter Reform, in other words, it’s a once-in-a-generation rewrite of the City Charter. Basically, NOW is the time to give YOUR input on real changes that can be made to the City’s Constitution.

Contact your Council Member to support our Office's Charter Reform recommendations to strengthen and protect the City Controller's Office!

The Controller's Office is requesting more auditors and fraud, waste, and abuse investigators. 🔎

We are on track to receive close to 800 fraud, waste, and abuse claims this year and we are only able to do 2-3 performance audits each year even though there are over 40 departments and hundreds of city programs. Having only 5 fraud, waste, and abuse investigators and 8 performance auditors for the second largest City in the country is insufficient and risky for safeguarding over $45 billion in citywide tax dollars that get spent annually.

THANK YOU to Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez for supporting independent auditing and fraud, waste, and abuse investigations and requesting the City to look into funding more oversight positions.

We'll let you all know if we end up getting more! You can also reach out to your Council Members to tell them you support fully funding our audits and fraud, waste, and abuse investigations!
