We’re honored and grateful to the Garden Grove Unified School District for recognizing Chief Covey and our OCFA Division 1 crews with the Community Heroes Award for our “outstanding partnership and extraordinary service to our schools.”

This recognition reflects the strong partnership we’ve built through countless emergency responses at school campuses and our team’s leadership, performance, and communication during the GKN hazardous materials incident in Garden Grove.

We’re especially appreciative of Dr. Mafi and all the district trustees for their partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.

There’s no greater responsibility than protecting our most prized possessions, our children. We’re proud to stand alongside our school partners to help keep them safe.

Thank you, GGUSD, for this meaningful recognition and for the work you do every day for our students and community!

🚒 Garden Grove Attic Fire

OCFA Division 1 crews responded this evening to a single-family home in Garden Grove after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the roof and called 911. The tenants were away at the time.

Arriving firefighters quickly identified a fire in the attic and launched an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting salvage operations to protect the home and its contents. Their coordinated efforts contained the fire to the attic, limiting further damage to the home.

Thankfully, no firefighters or civilians were injured.

👏 Great work by our OCFA Division 1 firefighters for their quick actions, teamwork, and focus on protecting property while keeping everyone safe.

🚒 Division 1 | Battalion 1

Division 1 Battalion 1 crews responded to a traffic collision with fire on the 605 Freeway at Katella Avenue. One occupant was ejected, and both occupants were transported by OCFA paramedics to a trauma center. We are hopeful those injured will recover quickly!

While OCFA resources are heavily committed to the Norte Fire and incidents in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, our communities continue to need us every day.

To help maintain coverage, many off-duty OCFA firefighters returned to work to staff relief apparatus and backfill positions for crews committed to the Norte Fire. This teamwork helps ensure we can continue responding to emergencies and providing service to our communities, even during periods of significant regional demand.

🚗 Freeway Safety Reminder: Always wear your seat belt, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid distractions while driving. When approaching an emergency scene, slow down, move over when safe and required, and follow the directions of emergency personnel. A few seconds of caution can help save lives.

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, OCFA teamed up with NFPA to promote the Charge Into Fire Safety campaign, aimed at educating our communities on Lithium-Ion Battery safety and the potential hazards associated with improper handling.

Important tips regarding buying, charging, and disposing of Lithium-Ion Batteries include:
* Check for a mark from a nationally recognized testing lab.
* Products that have not been properly tested have an increased risk of fire.
* Always use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
* Batteries charged with incompatible chargers can become a fire hazard.
* Charge devices like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside in a dry, flat area out of direct sunlight.
* Dispose of Lithium-Ion Batteries at a proper recycling location.
* Placing batteries in the trash or regular recycling increases the risk of fire.

Division Chief Covey was honored to have been invited alongside Battalion Chief Yeun to speak at the Los Angeles Area Fire Chief Association annual conference.

They had the opportunity to share the story of the GKN hazmat incident in Garden Grove, including the successes, challenges, and lessons learned while serving as Incident Commanders during a complex incident that impacted thousands of residents and businesses.

It was a privilege to represent and reflect on the work of so many dedicated first responders and partner agencies who came together to manage the incident and protect our community.

It’s also pretty humbling to stand in a room filled with so many outstanding fire chiefs and chief officers from across Los Angeles Orange, and other counties. Thank you, LAAFCA, for the invitation and the opportunity to share our experience and learn from one another.
