Neighbors reported smoke billowing from the second story of a home on Paseo San Gabriel in San Juan Capistrano at 7:24 this morning.

Firefighters arrived in just six minutes amid reports that someone might still be inside. Crews quickly searched the home, confirmed no one was inside, and confined the fire to the one residence in just 13 minutes, preventing it from spreading to the other three attached homes.

➡️ One part of this story we want to share as an important safety reminder: neighbors heard smoke alarms sounding when they noticed the smoke. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms because every second counts.

The cause is under investigation, and nobody was injured. Thank you to our partners at OCSD for their assistance.

🔥 Gibby Fire 🔥

Yesterday, crews responded to the Gibby Fire off Ortega Highway in Rancho Mission Viejo.

The fire grew quickly, but a robust attack from the air and ground was able to stop the blaze at approximately 217 acres. Firefighters, hand crews, dozers, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft all played a role in bringing the fire under control.

Crews remain on scene today continuing mop-up and patrol operations.

Thank you to our many assisting agencies, and thank you to the public for avoiding the area, allowing us a safe place to work.

Happy 2nd Birthday to OCFA’s Arson Detection K9, Timber!

At just two years old, Timber already has an important job. His powerful nose helps detect ignitable liquids, such as gasoline and lighter fluid. Alongside his handler, Captain Miller, Timber visits fire-related incidents to help investigators determine how a fire may have started.

Help us wish our fluffy, four-legged coworker a very happy birthday! 🐾🎉

Firefighters rescued a dog named Agusta from a house fire in Santa Ana shortly after 4 p.m. today.

Crews arrived at the fire on West Flight Avenue in just five minutes and confined it to the garage, preventing it from extending into the rest of the home. Firefighter paramedics treated and transported one patient to the hospital.

Thank you to our partners at Fountain Valley Fire Department and Santa Ana PD for their assistance. The cause is under investigation.

The Chain of Survival

Most people who go into cardiac arrest in the middle of the night don’t survive. Fortunately for Patrick, his young son William woke up at the exact moment his dad was experiencing a medical emergency. That alerted Patrick’s wife, Courtney, who immediately called 911. On the other end of the line was Wilbert, one of our emergency dispatchers, who quickly launched Engine 50 while providing Courtney with instructions until help arrived.

When Engine 50 arrived, Engineer/Paramedic Yorke and Firefighter/Paramedic Eckert immediately went to work, shocking Patrick’s heart and getting it beating again. Yesterday, Patrick and his family came to Station 50 to reunite with the team that helped save his life.

These reunions are incredibly special, and we don’t always get the opportunity to see someone again after meeting them on what may have been the worst day of their life. Patrick, Courtney, William, and the entire family, thank you for reaching out and coming back to see us. It means more than you know.

Looking into the future of wildland response in Orange County! 🔥

This morning, OCFA hosted a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the start of construction on the OCFA Wildfire Resource Center (WRC). The five-acre site, located in Rancho Mission Viejo, will serve as a centralized location for OCFA’s Hand Crew and Heavy Equipment Programs, strengthening year-round wildfire suppression, fuels reduction, and prescribed-fire operations.

The 30,000-square-foot facility will house up to 75 personnel and include a training classroom, administrative workspace, storage for wildfire equipment and apparatus, and more. The project was made possible in part through funding secured by Congressman Dave Min, helping bring this important investment in Orange County’s wildfire response capabilities to life.

We’re looking forward to watching this project take shape over the coming years and seeing the impact it will have on our wildfire response efforts.
