Thank you to The Examiner for recognizing the importance of COMBAT and its impact on communities throughout Jackson County!

In a recent editorial supporting the renewal of COMBAT, The Examiner highlighted the critical role these funds play in law enforcement, crime prevention, and community programs, including CSL’s work at Hawthorne Place Apartments in Independence.

Through our partnership with COMBAT, CSL is helping strengthen families, build community connections, and create safer neighborhoods.

We’re grateful to The Examiner for shining a light on this important work and the difference COMBAT continues to make in our community!

- Community Services League success stories.

Keiry joined Community Services League’s Family Stability Program (FSP) in December and began fully participating in January with two important goals: improve her English skills and increase her income.

Since then, Keiry has been working hard—and her determination is paying off!

Keiry successfully completed the full English course offered through the Independence School District. As her English skills and confidence grew, so did her opportunities at work. Her progress helped her advance into a lead position, an exciting step forward in her career and toward her goal of earning a higher income.

But Keiry didn’t stop there. She also saved enough money to invest in the next step of her education: GED classes offered in Spanish. She is now actively working toward earning her GED by the end of this year!

Keiry’s journey is a wonderful example of how education, career advancement, and financial planning can work together to create greater stability and new opportunities.

Congratulations, Keiry! We’re proud to celebrate each milestone along the way and excited to see where your hard work takes you next!

How does COMBAT impact Community Services League?

Since 2017, COMBAT funding has helped CSL serve children and families at Hawthorne Place Apartments. Today, our team of 13 works daily to create brighter futures for this community!

Through our partnership with COMBAT, CSL also serves as the neighborhood “hub” for Independence’s STRiVIN’ initiative, helping coordinate community efforts to reduce violence and strengthen neighborhoods.

Together, we're working to build a stronger, safer community! Help us continue to do this amazing work by voting Yes to extend Jackson County Combat on November 3rd.

Did you know there’s an estimated shortage of 5.5 million affordable homes across the United States?

At Community Services League, we’re working to make a difference right here in our own community, one home at a time!

Through our Affordable Homes initiative, we're creating opportunities for local families to achieve stability, security, and a place to call their own.

Take a look at the progress on our newest build on Farmer Street! Every step forward brings us closer to helping another family put down roots and build a brighter future.

Because affordable housing is about more than four walls and a roof. It’s about creating a foundation for families to thrive!

Building homes. Building hope. Building stronger communities.

- Community Services League success stories.

Jessika joined Community Services League’s Family Stability Program (FSP) with a goal of creating greater financial stability for herself and her family.

When she began the program, finding steady employment was a challenge. Many of the opportunities available to her were temporary positions or one-day jobs that didn’t provide the consistent income she needed. But Jessika was determined to keep moving forward.

To help cover her bills, she began selling food and taking on cleaning jobs whenever she could. Through her hard work and resourcefulness, Jessika was not only able to meet her immediate needs—she also managed to save money toward an important goal.

When a friend referred her to a promising job opportunity, Jessika learned that she needed a specific certification to qualify. Because she had been diligently saving, she was able to pay for the certification herself and take the next step toward her career goal.

And her hard work paid off!

Jessika successfully earned the certification and secured a full-time job with a consistent schedule that also works well for her personal and family life.

Jessika’s milestone is about more than finding a job. It’s about perseverance, planning, and taking small steps that build toward greater financial stability and opportunity.

Congratulations, Jessika! We’re excited to celebrate this milestone with you and can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!
