📱 Updated Cell Phone Policy | 2026–2027

A new school year brings new routines—and we’re excited to start the year with clear expectations, consistency, and a shared commitment to student success! 📚✨

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, Hackensack Middle School is implementing updated cell phone expectations for students in Grades 5–8, aligned with New Jersey State Law.

Our goal is simple: minimize distractions, maximize learning, and help our Comets make the most of every school day. ☄️

The graphic below outlines the progressive consequences for cell phone policy infractions, as well as important reminders for students and families.

We appreciate the partnership of our students, families, and staff as we work together to create a focused, respectful, and positive learning environment for everyone.

Clear expectations. Consistent support. A successful school year. 💙💛

📱 NEW STUDENT CELL PHONE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE 2026–2027 SCHOOL YEAR! 📱

As we prepare for a new school year, Hackensack Middle School is introducing updated student cell phone expectations designed to create better learning, more focused classrooms, and safer schools.

In accordance with NJ State Law and District Policy 5516, students are expected to have their personal communication devices powered off and stored throughout the school day. This includes cell phones, smart watches, earbuds/wireless headphones, smart glasses, and other personal communication devices.

📍 Devices may be stored:
🏠 At home
🎒 In a book bag
🔒 In a locker
📱 In classroom cell phone pockets

Students should not use devices during class changes or lunch periods. Exceptions for students with IEPs, 504s, medical accommodations, or other approved circumstances will be honored in accordance with district policy.

These expectations are about more than phones—they're about creating an environment where students can learn, engage, connect face-to-face, and feel safe.

We look forward to working together with our students and families to make this a successful transition!

PRIDE • PASSION • PURPOSE
☄️ Together, we create the best environment to learn, grow, and succeed.

We need your help! 💙💛 The HMS Back-to-School Jam on August 22 is coming up, and the HMS PTA is looking for volunteers to help make the event a success.

You don't have to volunteer for the entire event! Whether you can give 30 minutes, one hour, or a few hours, every bit of help makes a difference.

Volunteers can assist with setup, welcoming families, the PTA membership table, activities, cleanup, and other areas where an extra set of hands is needed.

🙋‍♀️ Can you help?
