⚠ PROJECT UPDATE: Overpeck Area II ⚠

Starting Tuesday, September 8, Bergen County, through its partners, will begin the long-anticipated capping project at the currently inaccessible Area II of Overpeck County Park. This project involves the capping of 11 waste debris piles illegally dumped within the area.

The work area will involve around 7.55 acres and will include the installation of designated natural barrier caps, erosion-control measures, and permanent vegetation establishment. Locals in the area can expect construction crews and trucks passing through the area.

Throwback Thursday!

Camp Merritt served as one of the largest embarkation points for American soldiers on their way to fight in Europe during World War I, with over 1 million soldiers passing through on their way to docks up and down the Hudson River. Originally sprawled out on 770 acres with 1,300 buildings, little of the original camp remains, series of fires in 1920 having destroyed what was left. Today the site is recognized with the Camp Merritt Memorial Monument, dedicated not only to those who passed through the camp, but to the 578 people who died at Camp during the 1918 influenza pandemic, their names inscribed at the monument’s base.

Placed at what was once the exact center of the camp, the monument sits in the traffic circle at Madison Avenue and Knickerbocker Road, on the border of Cresskill and Dumont. Bergen County purchased the site in 1919, and the monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1930. The monument is one of nine historic sites cared for by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural & Historic Affairs.

Right now, part of the monument complex—the historic parapet wall—is being carefully restored to its original condition. This preservation work is proudly funded through the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund, ensuring that Camp Merritt’s importance in local and national history endures for future generations.

The Bergen County Men’s Amateur Championship is this Saturday! For the first time, we will be welcoming spectators to join in on watching some of the County’s best amateur golfers compete for the 2026 title!

This is a completely free and open event to the public, no rsvp required! Please check in at the clubhouse before spectating.

All course conduct rules will apply. All who wish to spectate must respect the rules of the course and the players of the tournament. No alcohol consumption is permitted, and spectators will be expected to remain within designated walk or cart paths.

The tournament is expected to begin at 8:00 AM. Award ceremony will be at 5:00 PM or shortly after the tournament ends, where the winner will be handed the Championship Trophy by County Executive James Tedesco, III.

From Tuesday, Sept. 8th, to Wednesday, Sept. 9th, the Bergen County Zoo will be closed to the public for repaving work in the parking lot and public pathways.

Those who registered for the Zoo Babies Class on Tuesday will be accommodated through another entrance and escorted directly to the education building.
