LCFC Assists with Tractor-Trailer Fire on PA Turnpike

Shortly before 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, Ludwigs Corner Fire Company was dispatched to assist the Lionville Fire Company with a tractor-trailer fire on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Engine 73-5 responded with a crew of five and arrived to find crews from Engine 47-2 and Engine 47-5 already on scene with the majority of the fire knocked down.

Upon arrival, the Engine 73-5 crew was assigned to assist with overhaul operations. Part of the crew worked alongside Station 47 firefighters to create an opening in the side of the trailer, providing improved access to the contents inside. At the same time, the remainder of the crew accessed the top of the trailer and cut an opening in the roof, allowing water to be flowed from above to reach remaining hot spots.

Engine 73-5 also supplied its tank water to Engine 47-5 to support the continued overhaul effort.

Crews remained on scene until the remaining hot spots were extinguished and overhaul operations were completed. Engine 73-5 cleared the scene shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Accident with Entrapment on Pottstown Pike

Shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, LCFC, Uwchlan Ambulance, and Minquas Ambulance were dispatched to the intersection of Pottstown Pike and Milford Road for an auto accident. The initial report indicated that a vehicle had struck a telephone pole, was on its side, and it was unknown if the occupant was injured.

Within two minutes of dispatch, Upper Uwchlan Township Police arrived on the scene and confirmed that one person was trapped inside the vehicle. Engine 73-1 was the first fire apparatus to arrive and found an SUV against a telephone pole with the driver trapped inside. Crews also observed that the guide wires from the pole were in contact with high tension lines, causing electrical arcing.

Engine 73-1 stabilized the vehicle and removed the windshield to give emergency medical personnel access to the victim. The team was able to free the trapped operator and remove the individual through the back hatch of the SUV. The operator was then turned over to EMS for further care. QRS 73 also responded and assisted with patient care, while Deputy 73 held the Pottstown Pike Command.

While the crews were operating on-scene, fire police from LCFC closed Pottstown Pike between Milford and Font Road to allow crews to work safely. Eagle Service later removed the vehicle and the roadway was reopened approximately one hour and 15 minutes after the initial dispatch.

Building Fire Assist to Twin Valley

Just after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, LCFC was dispatched for a full company assist to the Twin Valley Fire Department for a shed fire in the 4100 block of East Nantmeal Township. Units from Glen Moore Fire Company, Lionville Fire Company, Geigertown Fire Company, and Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS were also included on the initial dispatch. Early reports indicated that a 100-by-100-foot shed used to store equipment was on fire.

The ambulance from Elverson-Honey Brook Area EMS arrived first and confirmed visible fire from the structure. Based on this report, along with the smoke column visible from the surrounding area, Chief 69 upgraded the incident to a working fire and requested three additional tankers due to the lack of hydrants in the area.

The working fire dispatch also added a medic unit from TowerDirect, Chester County Fire Marshals, and an air unit from Minquas Fire Company No. 2. The additional tanker request brought units from Honey Brook Fire Company #1, East Brandywine Fire Company, Lionville Fire Company, and an engine from Birdsboro-Union Fire Department.

Engine 69-1 arrived first and initiated fire suppression operations with assistance from Deputy 73. Engines 73-5 and 73-2 arrived shortly afterward. Engine 73-5 laid a supply line from Conestoga Road up the long driveway, with Engine 69-5 continuing the lay into the scene to establish a reliable water supply. In total, more than 1,000 feet of five-inch supply hose was deployed.

Crews deployed multiple handlines from Engine 69-1 and the crew from Engine 73-2 and 73-5 assisted with fire suppression efforts. Firefighters quickly brought the bulk of the fire under control. A porta tank was deployed at the end of the driveway, while a fill site was set up on Ironstone Lane to support water shuttle operations. Chief 48 managed water supply operations while Deputy 69 held the Conestoga Road Command.

Crews remained on scene until just before 6:00 p.m., completing overhaul operations and repacking hose before returning to service. Twelve LCFC members responded to the incident, representing an excellent daytime turnout for a Tuesday afternoon.

Thank you to West Whiteland Fire Company and Wagontown Fire Company for covering our local while crews operated at the scene. During that time, West Whiteland's engine handled one call for service.
