Fowlerville Senior Center members are learning Mahjong.
On Thursday, Beth Scott began tutoring Senior Center members on how to play Mahjong.
Our first Mahjong students were Beck Spatrisano, Donna White, Lonie Erdman, Darlene Lane and Mary De Faut.
Mahjong is a classic tile-based game developed in 19th-century China that typically involves four players drawing and discarding tiles to form four sets (melds) and one pair.
Standard Mahjong sets feature 144 tiles split into several categories:
• Suits: Characters (cracks), Bamboo (bams), and Circles (dots), numbered from 1 to 9 (36 of each).
• Honor Tiles: 16 Wind tiles (East, South, West, North) and 12 Dragon tiles.
• Bonus Tiles: Four Flower tiles and four Season tiles (often used in traditional Chinese and online versions).
Core Gameplay & Objective
• Objective: Collect a winning hand of 14 tiles by forming four melds (three of a kind called a pung, a four of a kind called a kong, or a sequence of three called a chow) and a single pair (eye).
• Turn Mechanics: Players draw one tile and discard one tile in a counter-clockwise rotation, stealing discarded tiles from others to complete melds when rules allow.
This game looks very interesting and our members are always willing to learn something new.
