Sharing a bittersweet update from the farm this morning. The stubborn little baby starling I tried to rescue didn't survive the night but it is all part of the circle of life. On a happier note Lotus is showing impressive progress with her ear hematoma and Fanta is loving the summer sunshine. I also brought Hugo down to the barn like a prince for some fresh air and now we are preparing for his confusing vet appointment on Tuesday.

We found an invasive European starling baby far from its nest near the pig pasture and had to figure out a safe spot for it since wildlife rehabbers cannot take them. After a bit of chasing and trying to keep it away from the barn cats, we managed to nudge it into some thick pasture ground cover where it has a fighting chance of being fed by its parents. To end on a brighter note we also checked in on the goats relaxing in the shade.

Hugo escaped his strict post episode house arrest to sneak down to the barn. He is supposed to be resting until we see the surgeon, but he just could not miss out on barn chores with the other dogs. Meanwhile the goats are short pitted in the run so I can tackle standard grooming maintenance on Misty, Persephone, and Wren. Fanta is taking her normal post breakfast nap and Ladybug is just one day away from finishing her very last bottle.

The pastures are overgrown with wild weedy brush right now and the goats and donkeys could not be happier. Voodoo is growing into his stunning confirmation and our little wether is showing off a beautiful coat while he waits for his new home. This roughage is exactly what their digestive systems thrive on and it means we can finally take a break from hauling heavy hay every morning. Tonka and Bailey are keeping a close eye on the fence line while Phineas takes over babysitting duties for the herd.

The latest update from the brooder shows the chicks and duckling going through their awkward teenage phase. Some are fully feathered and looking like miniature chickens while others are a complete hot mess with naked wings and runaway feathers. Hugo Is Finally Home but Things Are About to Get Comical

The Hugo monster is back at the farm after a wild emergency vet visit where he refused to sleep because he wanted to be part of the action. While he is doing night and day better, his breathing is not one hundred percent yet and we are officially on a multi-week house arrest countdown until his upcoming surgical consult. We decided to skip the emergent surgery route in favor of a much safer elective plan to fix his soft palate cycle once and for all. Hugo already celebrated his homecoming with a four-hour nap and dinner, and now the real challenge begins as we try to keep him calm and manage his big mad energy.
