Our final scheduled Open House is TOMORROW!

Haven’t had a chance to stop by one of our fire stations yet? Here’s another opportunity!

With Election Day approaching, we also welcome any lingering questions you may have about Propositions 404 and 405. We’re happy to have conversations, share information, and help you better understand what these measures would mean for Flagstaff’s public safety services.

Friday, October 30
1:00–3:00 PM
Station 3 | 4500 E. Nestle Purina Ave.

This is our last open house currently on the calendar, but we hope to offer more opportunities to connect with our community in the future!

Wet roads, reduced visibility, and slippery conditions are a dangerous combination!

With rain expected to continue over the next several days, we want to remind everyone to slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution while traveling.

Our firefighters respond to vehicle accidents in all kinds of weather, and we know just how quickly road conditions can change.

No destination is worth risking your life or someone else’s.

FACT FRIDAY!

Did you know that Flagstaff sits within the world’s largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest?!

Stretching from the New Mexico border, across the Coconino Plateau and Mogollon Rim, to the edge of the Grand Canyon, this vast forest covers more than 2.6 million acres.

Ponderosa pines can reach up to 200 feet tall, with lifespans of 400 to 500 years. Some old-growth trees are estimated to be an astounding 800 years old!

Mature ponderosas naturally self-prune and are remarkably resistant to low-intensity ground fires. Their open understory creates habitat for wildlife like elk, deer, black bears, and Abert’s squirrels. (Shout-out to the squirrels. They don’t get enough love!)

Decades of fire suppression, human development, and an increasingly dry climate have created conditions favorable to larger, more devastating crown fires. The trade-off for living among the pines is living with the constant threat of catastrophic wildfire.

One of our mottos in the fire service is to never stop learning. Over time, we’ve learned and adapted our strategies, utilizing active forest management and “good fire” to help protect the city we love so much.

However, the work is never done and requires an enormous number of labor hours. All Flagstaff firefighters are trained in wildland firefighting and wildfire risk reduction.

We’re proud to do the work to keep Flagstaff safe, and if we all do our part, this beautiful city will endure for generations to come!
