Take precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to plague, a serious bacterial infection typically spread through the bite of infected fleas or through contact with infected animals.

Follow these guidelines to stay safe:
- Avoid wild animals
- Prevent flea bites
- Prevent rodents at home
- Camp smart
- Protect pets

Individuals with symptoms consistent with plague should contact a physician immediately and should provide their healthcare provider with information about possible exposure to rodents or fleas. Treatment of plague with antibiotics is very effective.
