Downtown Spotlight: Spill The Tea!

Written by Edenton’s very own Laurie Edwards, Spill the Tea! is a bold new musical inspired by Penelope Barker and the 1774 Edenton Resolves — the earliest organized act of women’s political activism in American history. When Barker rallied 50 women to sign a public resolution boycotting British goods, these women made their voices heard in a way that captured the attention of the world. Now, Laurie has brought those voices to the stage!

Blending pop, hip-hop, orchestral music, and classic Broadway styles, Spill the Tea! brings humor, heart, and history together in a celebration of the women who dared to speak up and help shape our nation’s future. As we continue to celebrate 250 years of American independence, there’s no better place to experience this story than right here in Edenton, where it all began!

Even more exciting, these performances will mark the first show in the brand-new John A. Holmes High School Performing Arts Center

Saturday, October 24, at 7 PM
Sunday, October 25, at 3 PM

Admission is FREE, and more tickets are available as of today! Link in the comments.

Funded in part by a grant from America 250 NC, a program of the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, the Edenton performances are graciously sponsored by Regulator Marine, Colony Tire and Service, Dr. and Mrs. Alex Kehayes, and Willful Entertainment.

Downtown Spotlight: The Carolina Cottage!

After years of traveling back and forth between Delaware and Edenton, Don and William decided it was time to put down roots here. In January, they opened The Carolina Cottage, bringing with them the heart and soul of Not Too Shabby, their beloved vintage and home décor shop in Delaware.

Here, you’ll find a little bit of everything: vintage furniture, painted and up-cycled treasures, home décor, gifts, local goods, snacks, coffee, and plenty of color and character. William brings years of experience as a florist and a knack for giving old furniture new life, while Don adds his own artistic touch with beautiful handmade fused glass pieces.

But what makes The Carolina Cottage especially wonderful is the thoughtfulness behind it all. Don and William love supporting small businesses, local makers, woman-owned companies, and businesses that give back. From a custom coffee blend roasted by Edenton’s own Roanoke Roasting Company, to dog treats that support animal rescue, so many of the things on their shelves have a story of their own. The watercolor kits come from a woman-owned business in Washington, D.C., while some of their candles are made by a company that proudly employs people with disabilities.

As they put it, “When you own a small business, you get to choose those things. You get to make mindful decisions.”

That care and creativity extend to their plans for the future, too. Don and William are planning to offer creative classes in everything from fused glass and ceramics to furniture painting, giving folks even more opportunities to learn something new and connect with their community.

We’re so glad these two have chosen to call Edenton home, and we can’t wait to see all the wonderful things they bring to our town. Next time you’re strolling through, stop by The Carolina Cottage, say hello to Don and William, and explore a shop filled with creativity, character, and a whole lot of heart. You never know what treasure you’ll find!

The Carolina Cottage is located at 104 West Queen Street, and is open Thursday-Saturday 11-5 and Sundays 11-3.

Volunteer at the Edenton Peanut Festival!

We’re still looking for a few more volunteers to help make this year’s festival run smoothly.

Our biggest needs are:

-Early Morning: Nut Run Water Station Attendants
-Mid-Morning: Peanut Parade Lineup Help
-Afternoon: Battle Of The Bands Trailer Drivers

Whether you’re a longtime Edenton local or new to the community, volunteering is a great way to give back, meet your neighbors, and be part of one of Edenton’s favorite traditions.

“I have a vegetable garden for the town employees. I pick the veggies and bring them to the different departments. I just planted the collard greens for the fall, and I’m getting ready to plant the cabbage and broccoli when the weather cools down a little bit.

I’m the landscape supervisor. We take care of all the parks, all the right-of-ways, all the flowers in baskets and boxes, we plant trees, prune trees… We take care of anything having to do with the horticulture of Edenton. We keep it lookin’ pretty.

And I have a really great crew. They keep this town maintained really well. There are a lot of areas that people just take for granted, don’t know how they get maintained. My crew does all the big stuff. And I’m behind the scenes doing the trimming and the watering. I’m out here watering 7 days a week, unless we have a fairly good rain. My wife’s a really good horticulturist too. She helps me in the garden on the weekends. Any questions I might have about a flower, I go right to her.”

-Tosh Towe, Town of Edenton Landscape Supervisor
