May is Jewish American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Jewish Americans.

Jewish American Heritage Month Spotlight:

Emma Lazarus was a Jewish American author, activist and poet, most famous for her 1883 poem, "The New Colossus," inspired by and now installed on the Statue of Liberty. Learn more about Emma Lazarus in the video below, and share the poem with your family! What does this poem mean to you?

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Earlier this month, Easthampton Public Schools students, families, staff, Superintendent Balch, school committee members, and city councilors marched together in the Hampshire County Pride Parade. Despite the rain, more than 40 participants marched proudly down Main St. in Northampton, waving flags, handing out stickers, and high-fiving Easthampton neighbors and spectators along the route. Thank you for your support!
