They would kill us if they could… but they didn’t.

Inspired by the words and revolutionary vision of June Jordan, an excerpt from my performance in The Awesome Difficult Work of Love.

And still, we remain. Still, we create. Still, we find one another in our stitched-together, uncommon communities.

Resilience isn’t just about surviving what was meant to destroy us. It’s about what we continue to build, together, in spite of it all.

Grateful to have shared poetry alongside an incredible collective of musicians, poets, and artists for this community-centered performance led by nationally acclaimed composer and pianist Adrienne Torf.

Featuring Jordan Hamilton, LuFuki, Nassir Thomas-Jackson, Lisa Sarno, Natasha Elle Thomas, Renee Back, Dale Potter, visual artist Maurice Lavel, and yours truly.

We must begin the awesome difficult work of love. ❤️

Everybody ain’t invited to the cookout. 👀

Sameness doesn’t equal safety. Just because we share a rhythm, a culture, a community, or even a vision doesn’t mean we share the same intentions.

We can be on the same dance floor and still be making very different moves.

Discernment is necessary, even in familiar spaces.

😮‍💨 Being a talented artist doesn’t automatically make you a strong applicant. I learned that the hard way.

My applications shifted when I started asking for help. Shoutout to Nandi Comer for helping me understand how to better communicate the value of my work.

And while everybody’s chasing the big fish, don’t overlook the smaller opportunities that can be just as valuable. If you know, you know. 👀

Don’t confuse your ability to create with your ability to apply and receive. One does not determine the other.

💙🎵With Baba Juke, I built the platform, curated the artwork, and created space for community storytelling, but I overlooked something important: building a system for people to actually BUY THE ART.

Community impact and economic opportunity can exist in the same room. 💰

So, I have this theory. 🧠 🎙️👀

I see Detroit as an incubator. A place where creativity should be cultivated, nurtured, developed, and prepared for the world. With this much talent concentrated in one city, I can’t imagine it was ever meant to stay here.

There’s something ancestral about that. We come, we build, we leave, we gather, and we give back.

What if our greatest contribution to Detroit isn’t just what we create here, but what we carry into the world and bring back home?

💐 📸 Look at these impromptu photos taken by .rgb so vibrant and colorful, makes me think of a mystical forest under water. So unexpected but so fun.

This installation was an extension of her solo exhibition, “The Cartography of Curiosity”. She brought the garden and “Plant a Seed” pillows from the show together with giant flowers to create a space to pause, plant an intention, and remember that you deserve your flowers, too….

💰 🏃🏿 When does hustling stop being a choice and become a condition of survival?

We are resource-rich, but systems-poor.

Working ourselves to exhaustion trying to cash a blank check from a system with no balance.

And somehow, we’re still expected to cover the difference.
