Behind the Brush: Created during the Great Depression through the WPA Federal Art Project, Ralph Chessé’s "Family Group" reflects a moment when art became both work and storytelling. Known as both an artist and puppeteer, Chessé used bold color and expressive forms to depict a Black family set within a southern rural landscape.

When the WPA disbanded in 1943, one of Chessé’s prints found its way to the collection, preserving a powerful example of art created during a pivotal chapter in American history.

“For want of a better model,” Vincent van Gogh often turned the brush on himself.

He painted in Paris during the summer of 1887, this Self-Portrait reflects a lighter palette and a brighter mood inspired by the Impressionists. The Detroit Institute of Arts also made history as the first public museum in the United States to purchase a painting by Van Gogh when it acquired Self-Portrait in 1922.

Drag is art and it’s taking center stage at the DIA. ✨

Emma Sapphire and Sir Guy turned the museum galleries into their runway ahead of the DIA’s first-ever drag show, “The Art of Drag” on May 29. Kicking off Pride Month, this unforgettable evening celebrates drag as an art form through performance, fashion, creativity, and self-expression at the DIA.
