🇺🇸 AN AMAZING FEAT TO REMEMBER THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND! 🇺🇸

Talk about LABOR! 💪

The historic DeRidder USO Building, now the War Memorial Civic Center, was built in ONLY 39 DAYS at a cost of $57,480!

Construction began in October 1941 and it opened on November 28, 1941. Citizens were determined for DeRidder to be among the first communities to open a USO Club, working overtime and even donating furnishings to help make it happen.

The DeRidder USO became the first separate facility used as a United Service Organizations (USO) Club in the United States, serving thousands of troops stationed at Camp Polk, the DeRidder Army Air Base, and those participating in the massive Louisiana Maneuvers during World War II.

When the USO's wartime mission ended following World War II, the community made sure this historic landmark would live on.

Since 1946, Beauregard Parish residents have continued supporting its preservation through a millage/ad valorem tax.

The building was renamed the War Memorial Civic Center in memory of the known 51 local heroes who gave their lives during World War II.

On February 25, 1992, this historic building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

More than eight decades later, it is still standing. It has weathered countless storms and hurricanes with minimal damage.

They say, “They just don’t build things like they used to.”

In this case, 39 days of hard work created something that has lasted 85 years—and counting. 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

This Labor Day, we remember not only the labor that built this historic landmark, but the generations of citizens who have worked to preserve it.

🏍️ I FINALLY CAUGHT ONE! 🏍️

I was finally able to catch one of the riders participating in the Tour of Honor! Normally, they pull up, capture their photo, and are gone before I can make it outside to meet them.

Last week was different!

This rider came inside thinking our historic building was still operating as a USO. She asked if she could cool off for a bit and clean some of our infamous Louisiana love bugs 🦟 off her helmet.

I explained that while we no longer serve as a USO, she—and any rider participating in the Tour of Honor—is welcome to stop in, cool off, and say hello whenever we're open!

Meet Nancy Webb of Dallas, Texas! 🇺🇸🏍️

Nancy is 99,000 miles into a 100,000-mile charity ride! Along the way, she camps out at churches, American Legion posts, VFWs, and motorcycle dealerships.

And check out that glove tan “tattoo”! That’s proof of some serious miles on the road!

Nancy, it was such a pleasure getting to meet you. Thank you for your service and for participating in the Tour of Honor. We’re glad the historic DeRidder USO Building—now the War Memorial Civic Center—could still offer a traveling rider a cool place to stop, just as this building welcomed service members so many years ago. ❤️🤍💙

Safe travels as you finish those final miles, Nancy! 🇺🇸

A very special thanks to Bobby Oakes who submitted our historic War Memorial Civic Center to be included in this year's tour.
