FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Harrison County Sheriff’s Department to Increase Impaired Driving Enforcement Ahead of Labor Day

Harrison County, Indiana — As summer comes to an end and the Labor Day holiday approaches, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Indiana in increasing efforts to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roadways.

Beginning August 19 through September 7, 2026, Harrison County Sheriff’s deputies will participate in increased traffic enforcement as part of the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The statewide enforcement effort is administered through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) and supported by federal traffic safety funding provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Deputies will be conducting increased patrols and traffic enforcement throughout Harrison County, with a particular focus on identifying motorists who are operating vehicles while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Impaired driving remains one of the most serious threats to motorists on Indiana roadways. Preliminary data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) indicates that in 2025, nearly 23% of Indiana traffic fatalities involved alcohol, while more than 41% involved drug impairment.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department is reminding everyone that impaired driving is preventable. Drivers should make arrangements for a sober ride before consuming alcohol or using any substance that could impair their ability to safely operate a vehicle.

Have a Plan Whether You're Driving, Riding, or Hosting

Before drinking, plan for a safe and sober ride home.

Never allow someone who has been drinking or is impaired by drugs to get behind the wheel.

If you are hosting a gathering, make sure your guests have a safe and sober way to get home.

If you observe a suspected impaired driver on the roadway, call 911 and provide the vehicle's location and description if it is safe to do so.

Always wear your seat belt. A seat belt is one of the best defenses against an impaired driver.

In Indiana, it is illegal to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. However, motorists may be arrested for operating while impaired at any BAC level when an officer determines that the driver is impaired.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department encourages everyone to enjoy the final weeks of summer responsibly. If you are impaired, do not drive. Make a plan, get a sober ride, and help ensure everyone makes it home safely.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and supported with federal traffic safety funds provided by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

For more information about impaired driving, visit NHTSA’s impaired driving resources.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Safe Backstops Save Lives

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department is proud to serve a community that respects the traditions of responsible fi***rm ownership, hunting, and recreational shooting. The overwhelming majority of fi***rm owners handle their fi***rms safely and responsibly. This message is not directed at them—it is intended to remind everyone that the negligent actions of a few can have devastating consequences.

Although Harrison County is largely rural, homes, farms, businesses, roadways, and neighboring properties are often closer than they appear. Modern r***e cartridges can propel bullets at extremely high velocities. If a shot misses its intended target and is not stopped by a suitable backstop, that bullet may travel well beyond the intended shooting area. Depending on the cartridge, bullet, firing angle, and terrain, a projectile can travel more than a mile while still retaining enough energy to damage property or seriously injure—or even kill—another person.

For that reason, knowing what is beyond your target is just as important as identifying the target itself. Before shooting, choose a location with a substantial natural or constructed backstop that is capable of safely stopping the projectile. Never fire toward the horizon, over hills, across roadways, or in any direction where you cannot account for where the bullet may ultimately come to rest.

Every round fired carries a responsibility. Once a bullet leaves the barrel, there is no way to call it back. A moment of carelessness can result in irreversible consequences for innocent people and their families.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department supports the lawful, safe, and responsible use of fi***rms. We also have zero tolerance for negligent or reckless fi***rm use that places others at risk. If your actions result in damage to another person's home or property, or worse, cause injury or death, you may face criminal charges and be held accountable under the law.

Please make safety your highest priority every time you shoot. Use an appropriate backstop. Know your target and what is beyond it. Protect your family, your neighbors, and our community through responsible fi***rm ownership.

A Great Ending to a Special Rescue Story

On May 11, 2026, while conducting a traffic stop along the interstate, Deputy Cat Wolfe and Deputy Kanon Stewart noticed an owl sitting just off the shoulder of the roadway. After taking a closer look, they found the owl had an injured wing and was unable to fly.

The owl was safely rescued and transported to Raptors Rise Rehabilitation Center, where it received specialized care for more than two months.

On July 18, 2026, we were honored to watch this beautiful bird return to the wild. Seeing it spread its wings and fly free was a rewarding reminder that even small acts of compassion can make a lasting difference.

A special thank you to Raptors Rise Rehabilitation Center for the incredible work they do. Their rehabilitation efforts are made possible through grants, donations, and their own personal dedication to caring for injured birds of prey. If you’re looking for a worthy local cause to support, we encourage you to consider them.

Great job, Deputy Wolfe and Deputy Stewart, for taking the time to make a difference—not just for our community, but for our wildlife as well. 🦉
