IDNR has awarded $495,000 in federal grants to 73 volunteer fire departments across the state to help with purchasing new equipment or paying for fire training.

The Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) grant program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The program provides matching funds to aid fire departments in the purchase of new equipment and helps fund training. Funding is passed through IDNR to local fire departments and fire training academies.

The 73 grantees provide fire protection to about 250,000 Illinois residents, primarily in rural areas of Illinois.

This week we would like to recognize and thank the dedicated EMS providers who serve our community. Our department is proud to currently have 11 EMS providers consisting of 5 EMRs, 5 EMTs, and 1 Paramedic.

The Coffeen Fire Department operates at the EMR level, with a Basic Life Support (BLS) upgrade when one of our EMTs is on scene. On a personal note, I would like to thank each and every one of our EMS providers for the time, effort, and dedication you put into serving the residents of our district. Your willingness to train, respond at all hours of the day and night, and care for our community does not go unnoticed. I am proud to work alongside all of you and appreciate everything you do for this department and the people we serve.
