The Epilepsy Association is a local, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, based in Cleveland, OH, that has been assisting adults, children and families dealing with the challenges of epilepsy since 1953.

We will be presenting James Bavis, MD, with the Legacy Award at the Epilepsy Association Gala next week. One of many reasons he was nominated is his passion for increasing access to healthcare. People with epilepsy in rural areas often have difficulty getting treatment because they don't live near a specialized facility and are unable to drive themselves. Dr. Bavis is a major part of Summa Health's efforts to reach these patients through telehealth and innovations like ambulatory EEGs.

We hope you'll join us on November 6 to celebrate Dr. Bavis and our other award honorees. Nurse clinician Sherry Weber will be receiving the Caregiver Award and Michael White will be receiving the Humanitarian Award.

Brenna's Law designates October 2026 as SUDEP Awareness Day in Ohio, in honor of Brenna Brossard, who passed away from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy in 2022 at age 25.

We encourage you to take time today to talk to your friends, family, and coworkers about SUDEP. Many people living with epilepsy don't know that there are an estimated 3,000 SUDEP deaths per year in the U.S. alone. Or that they can minimize their risk by taking their medications consistently and on time, or using a seizure detection device if they have tonic-clonic/grand mal seizures.

Too many people have never heard of SUDEP. Every person we educate is a potential life saved.

October is SUDEP Awareness Month, and in Ohio, SUDEP Awareness Day in October 26. SUDEP stands for Sudden Unexpected Death in EPilepsy, when someone who is otherwise healthy passes away without warning or a cause, often while they're sleeping.

SUDEP is most common in people with uncontrolled tonic-clonic seizures, but it can happen to anyone with epilepsy.

The most preventable risk factor is missing a dose of your meds or taking them late.

Halloween is almost here, do you have a plan in place to avoid seizure triggers at parties or trick-or-treat? In most cases, its as easy as taking the same precautions you might use on a normal day.

-Don't stay awake much later than normal
-Set reminders or alarms so you don't forget to take your medicine on time while you're out celebrating
-Take breaks to cool down if you're wearing a mask or bulky costume
-Drink water regularly, especially if your costume is hot or you're walking far
-Avoid alcohol
-Go out before sunset to avoid flashing lights, if you're going to a party, ask the host if their decor includes flashing lights
