"Women of the Fairy Tale Resistance" by Jane Harrington and Illustrated by Khoa Le

Do you think you know Fairy Tales? A long, long time before The Brothers Grimm ever wrote their stories, there was a group of young noblewomen stuck in forced marriages, who didn't have freedoms to travel, love who they wanted or even give their opinions. But they COULD write!

This enchanting book showcases these forgotten women authors (one even coined the term "Fairy Tale"!) and their subtle, but powerful defiance of the patriarchal society in which they lived. You can find it on the New Book Shelf on the main floor of the Woodward Library: https://apsu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01APSU_INST/1pjggnv/alma991007449741508071.

🌳 You may have noticed something unusual in the basement of the Woodward Library. There appears to be a tree growing down there! And not just ANY tree, but one graced by magical and well-loved children's literary characters. One of our talented staff agreed to create this for us to celebrate the permanent location of the Juvenile Collection. Yeah, we DO have kids' books! Just look for the magic tree! πŸ˜‰

Mid-Week Muse:

On September 2, 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated The Great Smoky Mountains as a national park. The park straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains and shares land in the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the most visited national park in the United States.

Did you know that in mid-June, people flock from all over to witness the incredible display by all of the native fireflies who live there? If you haven't visited the park, you are really missing out on some of the most spectacular forests, waterfalls and trails in the country!

The Woodward Library has access to a great online book, called "The Wild East: A Biography of the Great Smoky Mountains" by Margaret Lynn Brown. You can access it through our EBSCO e-book Collection by using the Peay Search database: https://apsu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01APSU_INST/1pjggnv/alma991007469009708071

Two for Tuesday! πŸ’₯ Vin Diesel Edition πŸ’₯

This week’s Two for Tuesday challenge has two movies starring actor Vin Diesel. Which character do YOU think he plays better?

🏎 "The Fast and the Furious": This film series is infamous by now, where Vin Diesel plays Dominic Toretto, a professional street racer. If you like fast cars, action, and a pulse-pounding plot, you should check it out. There are 10 movies in the series so far, with an upcoming eleventh one being the final film.

πŸŒ‘ "The Riddick Trilogy": Comprised of three sequential films ("Pitch Black", "The Chronicles of Riddick" and "Dark Fury"), these sci-fi stories follow Vin Diesel as the character Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous and charismatic criminal, who toes the moral line between light and dark.

If you'd like to watch either (or both!) of these movies, you may find them in the Popular Audiovisual Collection by Starbuck's on the main floor of the library.

Monday Motivation!

"I want to be sitting on my deathbed knowing that I went for it. I'm going to get sick and die at some point, and I would like in that moment to smile at the life I lived. That I had Guts. That I had standards. That I loved people intensely. That I lived in a loud, brave way." ― Chelsea Handler, I'LL HAVE WHAT SHE'S HAVING

That sounds like a pretty good attitude to have! If you'd like to read more, this book may be found on our Featured Book Shelf on the main floor of the Woodward Library.
