📸 1 Day to a Safer School Year: Think Before you Post!

ONE. MORE. DAY! 🎒✏️

Tomorrow morning, backpacks will be packed, buses will be rolling, and our social media feeds will be filled with those adorable first-day-of-school photos. ❤️

For the final day of our 7 Days to a Safer School year, SRO Mortinson volunteered to demonstrate what we're talking about. 😂

👍 PHOTO #1: Favorite food? Favorite color? What you want to be when you grow up? Have at it!

👎 PHOTO #2: School name? Teacher and classroom? Bus number? Those details you want to keep to yourself.

Those first-day boards are a fun tradition, but they can sometimes tell people more about your child's daily life than you intend.

Before you post, take a second look at the board and the background of your photo. School signs, house numbers, street signs, bus stops, and other identifiying details can give away information, too. 👀

The goal isn't to stop sharing those first-day smiles - just share the memory, not the routine. 💙

And don't worry, SRO Mortinson. We won't tell anyone you're 47 and still waiting to become a space ranger. 😉🚀

Today, we recognize the hard work and contributions of the people who help make our community what it is.

From those who serve our community each day to the countless people working behind the scenes in businesses, schools, healthcare, public safety, public works, and so many other professions; thank you for the work you do!

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day! And to those spending the holiday at work, we appreciate you. 💙

🚌 2 Days to a Safer School Year: Bus Stop Safety

Just 2 days to go! 🎒 The backpacks are packed, alarms are being set, and soon school buses will be making their way through our neighborhoods again.

Yesterday, we talked abut what drivers need to do around school buses. Today, we're talking about the most important people at the bus stop: our kids! 💙

Before Tuesday morning, take a few minutes to review these bus stop basics with your student:

⏰ Be ready before the bus arrives. Get to the stop a few minutes early so there's no need to run or rush.

🚌 Stand back from the road. Wait in a safe spot away from traffic until the bus has come to a complete stop and the driver is ready for you to board.

👀 Make sure the driver can see you. If you can't see the bus driver, there's a good chance the bus driver can't see you!

🚸 Wait for the driver's signal before crossing. Never assume it's safe just because the bus has stopped.

➡️ Cross in front of the bus, never behind it. Stay far enough in front that the driver can see you the entire time.

🎒 Dropped something near the bus? Leave it! Tell the driver before trying to retrieve anything that falls near or underneath the bus.

And parents, especially with younger riders, practice the routine before the first morning. Knowing where to stand, when to cross, and what to do if something unexpected happens can make that first bus ride a whole lot easier.

Safe school bus trips start before kids ever step on the bus. 🚌💛

🚌🛑 3 Days to a Safer School Year: School Bus Stop Arm Law

We're down to 3 days until the first day of school! 🎒

For today's 7 Days to a Safer School Year, we have an important update for Minnesota drivers, because the school bus stop arm law changed earlier this year.

🔴 See the flashing red lights? STOP.

Under the updated law, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus as soon as its red lights are flashing.

You do NOT have to wait for the stop arm to be extended. 🛑

Previously, the law required both the flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. The change closes that gap and makes the rule much simpler:

🟡 Flashing yellow/amber lights: The bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop.

🔴 Flashing red lights: STOP at least 20 feet from the bus. The stop arm does not need to be out yet.

✋ Stay stopped until the red lights are no longer flashing.

💵 Failing to stop is a misdemeanor and carries a minimum $500 fine.

But the most important reason isn't the ticket. It's the child who may be stepping off that bus or crossing the street. 💙

School buses will be back on our roads next week. Give yourself extra time, pay attention, and remember:

RED LIGHTS = STOP 🛑 Don't try to beat the arm.

🎧📱 4 Days to a Safer School Year: Heads Up, Phones Down

We're down to 4 days until the first day of school! 🎒

For today's 7 Days to a Safer School Year reminder, we're asking students to do something pretty simple: heads up, phones down 👀📵

Walking or biking to school may be part of the daily routine, but phones, earbuds and other distractions can make it easy to miss what's happening around you.

Before Tuesday morning, parents please take a minute to remind your walkers and riders:

👀 Look up before crossing. Stop, look both ways, and make sure drivers see you before stepping into the street.

📱 Put the phone away at intersections. That text, video, or notification can wait until you're safely across.

🎧 Turn down the volume. If you're wearing headphones or earbuds, make sure you can still hear traffic, horns, sirens, and what's happening around you.

🚸 Use crosswalks and follow traffic signals. Cross where drivers expect to see you.

🚲 Stay alert on your bike, too. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands ready to react.

And drivers, this reminder goes both ways - your phone can wait, too 📵 With students heading back to school, there will be more kids walking and biking throughout our community.

Whether you're behind the wheel, on two wheels or on two feet: pay attention to what's around you. 💙

🚲⚡5 Days to a Safer School Year: E-Bike Safety

We're officially 5 days away from the first day of school! 🎒

As students get ready to head back, some will be getting there on two wheels. These days, that may mean a bicycle, e-bike or something that may look like an e-bike but legally isn't one.

For Day 5 of our 7 Days to a Safe School Year, we're talking E-Bike Safety 🚲⚡

Before your child rides to school, take a few minutes to make sure you both know what they're riding and the rules that come with it.

A few important reminders:

⚡ Not every electric two-wheeler is legally an e-bike. Know the difference between an e-bike and an e-moto before your child hits the road.

🚲 E-bike riders must follow the rules of the road, just like bicyclists.

🪖 Make the helmet part of the routine, right along with the backpack. And remember that Minnesota law requires helmets for certain younger riders.

👀 Phones and headphones can wait. Riders need to be able to see, hear, and react to what's happening around them.

🔦 Check the basics before heading out: tires, brakes, battery, lights, and reflective gear.

🏫 And if your student plans to ride to school, check with their school about any rules for e-bikes on school property.

🏡 6 Days to a Safer School Year: Home Alone After School

The countdown continues! 🎒 There are just 6 days until the first day of school, and today we’re talking about what happens after that final bell rings.

For some kids, heading back to school also means spending a little time home alone before a parent or caregiver gets home. If that’s part of your family’s routine this year, now is a great time to make sure your child knows the plan.

Before the school year begins, talk through a few basics together:

🔒 Lock the door once you’re inside and don’t open it for anyone you aren’t expecting.
📱 Check in with a parent or trusted adult when you get home.
🙅 Don’t tell callers, people at the door, or anyone online that you’re home alone.
🔥 Know your family’s rules for cooking, appliances, and having friends over.
☎️ Know who to call for help, and when something is an emergency that requires 911.
🏡 Have a plan for what to do and where to go if your child gets home and something doesn’t seem right.

Being home alone is a big step toward independence, a little preparation can go a long way toward helping kids handle it safely and confidently. 💙

🎒 The countdown is ON! 🎒

One week from today, backpacks will be packed, buses will be rolling, and students will be heading back to school!

As we count down to the first day, we're kicking off our 7 Days to a Safer School Year series. Each day, we'll share a quick safety reminder for students, families, and drivers as everyone gets ready to settle back into the school year routine.

First up: School Zones are Back! 🚸

After a summer of quieter streets around our schools, it's time to start watching for more kids walking and biking, buses making frequent stops and increased traffic during the morning and afternoon hours.

A few reminders as school gets underway:

👀 Watch for kids near schools, crosswalks, and surrounding neighborhoods.
📵 Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
🚗 Slow down and obey posted school-zone speed limits.
⏰ Give yourself a little extra time. Morning routines may be an adjustment for all of us!
🛑 Be ready to stop for crossing guards, pedestrians, and school buses.

Our kids will be back on the move before we know it. Let's all do our part to help get them where they're going safely. 💙
