🌱Tree Time - Tuesday (10:30AM-11:30AM) - Join us for our Parent/Child class. Our theme this month is butterflies and moths. Registration is required.

Fall brings the return of Cylburn's regular monthly programs. Explore the Arboretum through Tree Collection Walks, Wednesday Walks, and Gardener’s Workshops; introduce young children to the natural world during Tree Time; or enjoy an accessible walk through the grounds with Strolling Through Nature. Visitors can also stop by the Nature Education Center and the gardens during scheduled drop-in hours.

Over the next few weeks, we are taking a closer look at Cylburn’s five City Demonstration Gardens, each designed to showcase the possibilities of a typical Baltimore rowhome's yard. These gardens are meant to display the varied and sometimes surprising potential for gardening in the city.

The second garden is the Naomi Camper Memorial Garden, which honors the founding president of the For-Win-Ash Garden Club (named for Baltimore’s Forest Park, Windsor Hills, and Ashburton neighborhoods). This club has a long history at Cylburn, and helped to create one of our original model gardens in the 1980s. Today, the Naomi Camper garden demonstrates the concept “garden room." It invites visitors in through a reclaimed metal arbor, down a herringbone brick path, and into the heart of the garden, where a climbing Jackman’s clematis (Clematis jackmanii) utilizes vertical space and adds a focal point to the “room." This garden displays how even small backyards can be transformed into beautiful, planned-out spaces and honors the people who helped Cylburn become what it is today.

Oaks make a large, nutritious seed that wildlife love—high in fat, carbs, and protein! It’s beginning to be acorn season, here are some to look out for at Cylburn: Sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima), White oak (Quercus alba) and Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa).

🌳🎉 IT’S TIME TO MAKE TREE HISTORY BUT IT’S GOING TO RAIN! 🎉🌳

We had to postpone but you can still join TreeBaltimore for its semi-annual Tree Gathering on Thursday, September 3, from 5:30–8:30 PM at Cylburn Arboretum!

Twice a year, TreeBaltimore brings together Baltimore’s tree advocates, planters, maintainers, researchers, volunteers, and conservation professionals to celebrate our city’s urban forest. This free, public event is a chance to connect with fellow tree lovers, enjoy food and entertainment, and celebrate Baltimore’s trees. 🌿

After 52 years of the Bradford pear, Baltimore is choosing a new native, climate-resilient Official City Tree! 🌿

Come dressed as the tree you voted for, bring your flags and noisemakers, and show your team spirit! 🎉🌳

Explore the City Demonstration Gardens: Garden 1 of 5

Over the next few weeks, we are taking a closer look at Cylburn’s five City Demonstration Gardens, each designed to showcase the possibilities of a typical Baltimore rowhome yard. These gardens are meant to showcase the varied and sometimes surprising potential for gardening in the city.

Garden #1, the Garth, was designed by Apiary Studio with accessibility and affordability for the modern urban gardener in mind, inspired by the serene walls and courtyards of Medieval cloisters. The Garth features reused and repurposed materials throughout, such as cinder block planters and concrete rubble. As you meander through the garden you will notice fig trees, Ficus carica, have been trained along a wall to add more privacy to the space. City residents might be excited to learn that these trees can still thrive and produce fruit in small urban spaces like this one.

The genus Silphium includes bold native perennials known for their cheerful yellow flowers and value to pollinators. These late-summer bloomers add height to the garden. We have some at the back of City Demonstration Garden #3, The Learning Pad.

Our beautiful, evolutionarily ancient female ginkgo tree is full of unripe “fruits.” As they ripen throughout the fall, they turn an apricot color and fall to the ground, where they may displease passersby with their smell (often compared to rancid milk or vomit.) One theory is that the odor once attracted dinosaurs or other long-extinct animals to consume them and disperse the seeds.

Maybe, for you, it’s simply a reminder that fall has arrived?

The ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) is a living fossil (like a horseshoe crab), meaning the species has survived for millions of years virtually unchanged.
