If you live in an Austin apartment, composting is already available at your property.

Since 2024, multifamily communities across the city have been required to offer composting collection.

How can you tell what goes in?

Here's a tip: If it grew or came from an animal, it goes in your community's composting cart.

Customers notice when restaurants make sustainable choices.
And, according to recent research, they post reviews about it, tell their besties and keep coming back.

Austin food-permitted businesses can get up to $3,000 through the Zero Waste Business Rebate to help cover the cost of switching to reusable or compostable serviceware.

Applications are open through June 30. Read more at the link below. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธโ™ป๏ธ

Not all plastics belong in the blue recycling cart and knowing the difference is important.

Your blue cart takes hard plastics like bottles, jugs, cups, tubs and food containers. But plastic bags, bubble wrap, Styrofoam and a few other items have a different home.

We put together a guide breaking down exactly what goes where. Read it on our blog. โ™ป๏ธ

Recycling plastic helps reduce landfill waste and supports Austinโ€™s zero waste goals. However, not all plastics belong in your blue recycling cart. This guide explains what is accepted curbside and how to properly handle items that are not.

We've had some truck fires lately. ๐Ÿš›๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

Batteries, pool chemicals and hot ash are some of the top causes of fires in collection trucks.

Here's where they actually go:

Batteries
Drop them off at an Austin Public Library location that accepts them or at the Recycle and Reuse Center.

Pool chemicals
Take them to the Recycle and Reuse Center.

Hot ash + burnt charcoal
Planning to grill this Memorial Day weekend? Let ash cool completely overnight before it goes in your trash cart.

Not sure what goes where? Check the What Do I Do With Tool at AustinTexas.gov/whatdo.

The 2026 Circular Austin Showcase has wrapped and we have a winner!

Congratulations to Pickle Envy, this year's $10,000 Showcase prize recipient!

Libby Goldman and their team make authentic, deli-style pickles, sauerkrauts and seasonal fermented foods using locally-grown vegetables, including produce that would otherwise go to waste. It's a delicious way to give our community a nutritious, locally-made alternative to industrially-produced goods while keeping good food out of the landfill.

A huge thank you to all of this year's finalists for bringing their ideas + passion to the stage and all who attended!

Do you think about zero waste when shopping for home decor?

That's the idea behind Revision Goods, created by 2022 Circular Showcase winner Aileen Chen. She takes discarded premium materials and transforms them into stylish, one-of-a-kind pillows and home accessories, all handcrafted right here in Austin.

Each piece is 75-100% upcycled, meaning something that would have ended up in a landfill ends up in your home instead.

Attend Circular Showcase this Thursday, May 14! Tickets are free.
