👏 Recognizing Excellence in First Responders

The Alton Police Department would like to thank Senator Erica Harriss for hosting yesterday’s National First Responders Day recognition event, honoring the men and women who go above and beyond to serve our communities.

We are proud to recognize Detective Jacob Custer for his commitment to serving as a School Resource Officer and making a positive impact on the students and school community he serves.

Congratulations to Detective Custer and the other first responders from across the 56th District who were recognized for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to helping others.

Thank you to Senator Harriss for recognizing the important work our first responders do every day, and to The Outlet Event Center and the Edwardsville FFA Chapter for helping make the evening a success.

🚔 Happy National First Responders Day!

Today, we recognize and thank the men and women who answer the call when others need help. From police officers and firefighters to paramedics, EMTs, and 911 dispatchers, first responders serve our communities with courage, dedication, and compassion.

Whether responding to emergencies, helping someone through a difficult moment, or working behind the scenes to keep others safe, these individuals make a difference every day.

The Alton Police Department thanks all first responders for their service, sacrifices, and commitment to protecting and serving others.

Today, we remember Tyler Timmins of the Pontoon Beach Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on October 26, 2021.

Tyler loved playing softball in the various leagues throughout our area. Those leagues brought officers together outside of work, creating friendships and memories that extended beyond the field. Tyler was part of that family, and his memory lives on with those who had the privilege of playing alongside him.

Five years later, we continue to remember Tyler and the impact he had on those around him.

Our thoughts are with Tyler’s family, friends, and the Pontoon Beach Police Department as we honor his memory.

Gone but never forgotten. Rest easy, Tyler. 💙

Today, October 16, 2026, the Alton Police Department honors and remembers Patrolman August Mayford, who was killed in the line of duty on this date in 1937.

Patrolman Mayford was abducted and murdered after interrupting a group of burglars while making his rounds. When he failed to check in, fellow officers began searching for him. Fifteen days later, on Halloween, his body was discovered in a cornfield near Edwardsville. He had been beaten and shot eight times in the back.

Patrolman Mayford served the Alton Police Department for 18 years. He was a husband, a father of two, and a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the community he served.

Eighty-nine years later, we remember Patrolman August Mayford and honor his service, his sacrifice, and his place in the history of our department. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.
