* CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT *

The National Great Rivers Museum will be temporarily closed to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 21 to accommodate the 'We Work the Waterways' Student Career Fair for hundreds of regional high school students.

The Mississippi River is home to a variety of jobs, including transportation, conservation, engineering, and more. At ‘We Work the Waterways,’ students take a hands-on approach by participating in activities centered around river ecology, navigation, safety, and river-related career pathways.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we offer this unique experience to our regional youth. The NGRM will reopen for regular operation and dam tours on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.

Your life jacket is their safety net. Every year, we hear devastating stories of children left drifting alone after an adult goes overboard. Set the ultimate example: always wear your life jacket. It’s an investment in your family's future that you will never regret.

The peak summer heat might be fading, but the sun and wind are still strong out on the water. Sun, wind, noise, and vibration can cause "boater's fatigue," which can impair your reaction time just as much as alcohol.

Gear up before you go. Whitewater paddling is a thrill, but it requires proper training and the right safety equipment. Always wear a life jacket, helmet, and appropriate gear to stay safe and dry. Please Wear It

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, falls overboard, falls in vessel, and ejections contribute to a significant number of boating fatalities. Don’t let nature’s call become an overboard fall. Please Wear It

Heading out for the long Labor Day weekend? While having fun in the sun, play it safe by wearing a life jacket and boating with a buddy. Assign a "Water Watcher" to keep eyes on children constantly. Remember, drowning is silent and can happen in seconds. Have a safe and happy holiday!

When paddling on rivers, steer clear of commercial vessels. They have the right of way in a navigation channel. Human-powered vessels should avoid commercial traffic. Boats don’t have brakes and it takes an average of ¾ to 1½ miles for a towboat pushing barges to stop.
