🌊 HOW DO SCIENTISTS KNOW WHEN EL NIÑO IS ENDING?

Did you know that scientists cannot determine the end of El Niño by looking at air temperatures alone? 🌡️

They monitor several important signs in the Pacific Ocean and atmosphere.

🌊 First, ocean temperatures begin to cool. The unusually warm water in the central and eastern Pacific starts moving back toward normal conditions.

💨 Second, trade winds grow stronger. These winds help push warm surface water westward, restoring the Pacific's normal circulation.

🌧️ Third, rainfall patterns begin to shift. Changes in clouds and rainfall provide clues that the atmosphere is responding to the changing ocean.

🛰️ Scientists also analyze satellite observations, ocean buoys, weather stations, and climate models to confirm these changes.

The key is consistency: El Niño is considered to be fading when ocean and atmospheric conditions move back toward neutral conditions and the changes persist.

🌍 Nature doesn't change overnight—and neither does El Niño!

Today is World Mental Health Day.

And if no one has told you lately, I hope you know that you don't have to be strong all the time.

I hope you know that it's okay to have days when getting out of bed feels difficult, when your thoughts get too loud, or when you feel tired in ways you can't fully explain. You don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted to give yourself permission to rest. You don't have to pretend you're okay just to keep the people around you from worrying.

If you've been silently fighting battles no one knows about, I hope you give yourself credit for making it this far. Even if all you've managed to do lately is get through the day, that still matters. You matter, even on the days when you don't feel like yourself.

And please, don't be afraid to reach out. You don't have to find the perfect words to explain what you're feeling. You deserve to be heard, understood, and cared for, even when you don't know how to ask for it.

You are more than your struggles. You are loved, you are valued, and you deserve to be here, even on the days when life feels heavy.

Protecting communities faster ⛑️

NDRRMC has rolled out the implementing rules and regulation (IRR) for the “State of Imminent Disaster Act,” giving government agencies a clear guide to act before a calamity hits instead of only responding after.

Signed by President Bongbong Marcos in September 2025, the law allows early disaster declarations based on forecasts and risk assessments—so communities can be protected faster and more effectively

PRESS RELEASE
DOST-PAGASA S&T Media Services
Quezon City, 23 September 2026

DOST-PAGASA warns of an intensifying Very Strong El Niño through the first half of 2027.

A Strong El Niño is currently active in the Tropical Pacific and is expected to intensify into a Very Strong El Niño between September–December 2026, potentially persisting through the first half of 2027.

For the Philippines, this may bring warmer temperatures and below-normal rainfall, increasing the risk of dry spells, drought, and water supply stress that could affect agriculture, food security, energy, public health, and the economy.

However, El Niño does not mean that rain will completely stop. The ongoing Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and active tropical cyclones may still bring short-term heavy rainfall, particularly over the western sections of the country.

Prepare for prolonged dryness, but remain vigilant for episodes of heavy rainfall.

There’s nearly no doubt that the intensifying El Niño will persist through February 2027.

Forecasts from WMO’s Global Producing Centres show that El Nino is expected to continue intensifying into a very strong event in the coming months, peaking towards the end of 2026.

El Niño impacts – including on global temperatures and rainfall patterns – will be felt well into 2027.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?

“The powerful 2023/2024 El Niño contributed to 2024 being the warmest year on record. We should not be surprised if this record is broken,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.

The risks of floods, droughts and extreme weather may multiply and cascade as El Niño becomes stronger.

Climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, trade, fisheries, health, energy, transport, water resources, disaster management will be particularly affected.

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆?

No. The strength of an El Niño event alone does not determine how severe its impacts will be in any individual country or region. The location, season and other climate drivers also influence the impacts in a particular area.

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services provide the official warnings and climate information relevant to local communities.
